Renting Rooms In One Family House
My family and I finally go out of the he l l hole we were living in . We found out the home owner lived in another state and her ex-husband was collecting the rent and not giving her any of the rent. Then last October the homeowner finally got a new roof on the place but it was crappy work and it leaked worse...We stopped paying the rent and we were taken to court by the ex-husband for non payment... It was thrown out because he didn't own the house... We got lawyer and with all the pictures we had of the electrical issues and water leaks, it was a given that the land lord had no leg to stand on . He was ticketed for the problems in the house. We went back to court and he didn't show up this time and it was thrown out again.. We finally moved in May... But now he is renting out the rooms to many different people. He does NOT live there... Is it legal to rent out rooms like that? It includes utilities. I found out from an old neighbor when they thought that was going on and they had someone go and look to see what was going on... There are now at least 3 people living there. Not related... Only one shower/bath works. The electric in the house is not wired the right way... The neighbors are fuming... Is there anything that they can do? They are going to call the Town of Hempstead tomorrow..... I feel so bad because I knew this was going to happen. The house is on the market as a short sale....They haven't paid the mortgage in 4 years.....

Re: Renting Rooms In One Family House
I think all they can really do is call the town and complain.
But from what I have seen and heard, it can take years to get rid of a "problem" like this.
Unfortunately.
They could also always scope out potential tenants and let them know of the issues before moving in.
With lack of affordable housing on Long Island though, who knows if it will even make a difference.

I would stay out of it. You finally got out of that nonsense, don't put yourself back in the mix.

I'm not involved in it really. My old neighbors asked if there was anything that could be done and I figured I would ask on here... A lot of people seem to know about this stuff.

Re: Renting Rooms In One Family House
Most towns prohibit doing that. The neighbor could call the town and make a complaint about the situation and they would investigate it.
