Oprah can't afford a handbag?!
Earlier this week, Oprah Winfrey mentioned to Entertainment Tonight's Nancy O'Dell that she had encountered racism while in Switzerland for Tina Turner's recent wedding.
Oprah left her hotel to do a little shopping. "I didn't have my eyelashes on but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear ... but obviously the Oprah Winfrey show is not shown in Zurich." She was by herself and went into a shop and wanted to look at a handbag, "She says to me, no, it's too expensive," adding that Oprah "would not be able to afford that." She refused to give her the purse.
Winfrey left the store without making a
Forbes magazine estimates that Winfrey earned $77 million in the year ending in June.
A spokeswoman for the Swiss tourism office, Daniela Baer, told the Associated Press on Friday, "We are very sorry for what happened to her."
The tourism office also posted an apology on Twitter, saying "this person acted terribly wrong."

The item at the center of the Winfrey dispute was reportedly a Tom Ford Jennifer bag — named for Jennifer Aniston, a fan of the American designer. The version on sale at Zurich's Trois Pommes was one of the higher-end models, priced at 35,000 Swiss francs ($38,000).

Yup- I feel like even if I had Oprah's kind of money I still wouldn't spend amost $40 K on a bag just because it's ridiculous IMO.

I was thinking the same thing when I looked it up. Although I only found the one for $2000. I guess the $38K bag is a special edition or something.

Yeah, they don't. I have run into this problem in Germany. When I do a vocabulary lesson on different types of TV programs, talk show always comes up. I used the example of Oprah, and I got blank stares. Maybe one or two students know, and they find some other kind of example and use that. I am always baffled that they don't always know who she is.
