Tide Commercial - First Impression of the spanish lady?

So this commercial came on one day and I was watching TV with my friend and he says " That commercial is so racists".

We are both Puerto Rican. So I ask what the heck was he talking about and he said its obvious she is the maid and why does she have to be Spanish. He also said cause she is wearing White to look like a maid. LOL, I said its Tide commercial that's why she is wearing white. We debated back and forth because I always thought it was a grandmother & granddaughter and I actually thought it was cute.


I see now after I youtubed it, I was right. What was your first impression? Because he said that the majority would think she was a maid? I think he is DoDo head & the minority on this one. But I have to admit he did have me second guessing myself.

at least that's who i thought she was when i first saw this on the telly.

why would a grown a s s kid be chillin' next to the maid all relaxed like that. and why would they bother to translate for them?

It says mi abuela- that's grandmother.

Before I saw that (the title came up at the end) I thought grandma too. They are both wearing white shirts, and mentions how tide keeps whites white.

I'm Puerto Rican and I have to say, I think your DH is jumping the gun a little bit. lol

I saw it as an old fashioned Abuelita with her grand daughter.

It wasn't my DH it was my close friend. And I thought he was nuts and reaching! I only asked I guess to prove the obvious to
Him lol. My DH couldnt care less, ha ha.

I also didn't know it was titled Abuela until tonight when I posted the video, in which I text him to remind him what a dummy statement that was. And even if was the maid, i wouldnt have thought it was bad. I think the commercial is adorable as well!

yes, it's the grandmother. Their body language is more suggestive of family.

I thought it was the grandmother when I first saw it, but I can see how your friend interpreted the way he did. I'm Afro-Puerto Rican so I looked at it as her "Mami".

From the very first time I saw it it reminded me of my puerto rican abuela. She even has the same voice.

I def don't get the shes the maid feel from this commercial.

It's definitely her grandmother. She is wearing white because she is talking about how Tide gets her whites so white.

If he wants to be upset at something he should be upset with that Devious Maids show. Every single maid on the show is Hispanic. I think THAT is racist.
