DD is still RF at 21 months. Have no plans to change her.

DD is 22m and is in the 90th percentile for height. She has looooong legs. She is still RF and never complains - she doesn't know any different. It's actually getting kind of difficult to get her into her seat without hitting her head on the roof of the car, so I probably will FF her soon after age 2. But there is so much evidence that they're so much safer RF, I'll stretch it out as long as possible.

At what age did you

I have a question. I watched the video posted and it talks about head on collisions - but what about rear ending collisions? Are there arpny concerns about RF in a rear ending situation?

That said - dd is only 13mo and she's RF and we plan to keep her that way as long as possible. She's still got plenty of leg room.

Re: At what age did you "forward face" in the car seat?

2 yrs 4 months. And that was only because DS threw up in his car seat and I had to take it out. Hated to have to get it installed again. Installing FF was much easier and I could do it myself.

Re: At what age did you "forward face" in the car seat?

DD turned two earlier this month and is 95th percentile for height and is still RFing. They are MUCH safer RFing and should be kept RFing until they reach the max RFing limits for the seats they are in. The minimum recommendation age wise for turning them FFing is 2 years old.

Do a google search--you'll see sites with pics of pretty horrific crashes where RF children were completely unharmed.

I didn't turn my son FF until a month before his 4 th birthday. A child is 500 times safer when they are RFing!! And I only changed him because he outgrew his seat height wise.

The minimum is 2 years, but car seat techs and the National Highway Safety people recommend that the closer you can get to age 4 the better. At 10 months, the thought of changing them shouldn't even be crossing your mind!!

And their legs being scrunched up doesn't bother them at all. Their joints aren't fully formed. My son is now FF at 4.5, and when he goes to sleep in his seat, he'll still scrunch em up as if he was RFing. Lol.

Watch this video- its a true story and may change your mind about FF so soon

Great info. Loved this:

“Our recommendations are meant to help parents move away from gospel-held notions that are based on a child’s age,” Dr. Durbin said. “We want them to recognize that with each transition they make, from rear-facing to forward-facing, to booster seats, there is a decline in the safety of their child. That’s why we are urging parents to delay these transitions for as long as possible.”

I switched my boys at about 2.5 because they grew out of their seats. The seats I had were only good RF to 35 lbs. If I had another baby I would get a seat with the highest RF limit possible

Dd is 24mo and very tall. I have been agonizing over switching her to forward facing but I can't bring myself to do it. I keep thinking about "what if"...She bends her legs and seems fine so I feel too guilty to change anything.

He's 17mo and still happily RF. I want to keep him RF for as long as possible. 4yo, most likely. His legs fold and he's fine and happy.

I'd rather my son be a little cranky (although he's not. Lol) and a little hot, than a deadly spinal cord injury.

my boys are still rear facing at 23 months - they will be till the seat maximums - I don't care about their legs - and I find it easier to force them in rear facing then front facing (they have an older brother who used to fight going in and there are more ways to squirm away forward facing)

it helps also for rear end crashes - but rear end crashes are not usually as hard on the body

the rear facing seat prevents the child from getting whiplash. the child cannot be thrown forward in a rear facing seat because the back of the seat is there

AT 17 months my son was rfing slept through a rear end collision that had frame damage and over $10,000 worth of damage. The EMT that came to the accident site told me because he was rear facing he did not have to get checked out at the hospital - it was just much earier and he was safe

the hardest thing was turning him forward when his brothers were born - he spent 5 months only ffing in my car and rfing in my mom's and brother's car

I am very big on rfing as long as possible because a college friend lost a son at 22 months in a car accident

So sad for your friend. Chat Icon This really terrifies me and I've been recently posting videos on my FB and advocating for RF car seats, but sometimes I think people just don't want to listen or think it won't happen to me. We worry about GMOs, chemicals in sunscreen, bumpers on cribs, etc. Why not worry about car seat safety? Ugh! Getting in a car is just so scary to me.

Re: At what age did you "forward face" in the car seat?

Over 2yrs..

The leg thing doesnt bother them at all. Honestly turning her forward bugged her legs more since she didn't sit with the perfect bend at the knee and her legs would get 'tingly'.

I dont know any seat that requires 40lbs to go FF .. there's MAX for Rear facing at that maybe but not a limit before you can turn them. Generally, you want to keep them that way as long as you can.

AJ is nearly 5 and still under 40lbs!

DD is still rear facing at 25 months and 32 pounds. But she's almost at the height where I have to turn her.

I'm terrified....I might have to buy a new seat lol

Re: At what age did you "forward face" in the car seat?

All my kids were between 13-14 mos old. But my first two were when reco was still only 1 yr.

One thing to note - my doctor said many seats in the US are not made to accommodate rear facing up to the weight limits and to look at that before deciding to keep your child rear facing for as long as the new rec's or longer. She said esp seats made in US and older car seats (if you are reusing from another child). If the seat isn't made to accommodate that then it could be more harmful in an accident situation. Not sure the truth behind it but what was told and something to look into.
