At what age did you "forward face" in the car seat?
We are going to get the convertible car seats because they are completely outgrowing the carrier, and they are so annoying to carry!
At what age/weight do you forward face? I can't imagine waiting until the max weight that the manufacturer recommends most are 40 lbs!) Even if they are rear facing now at 16 and 20 lbs, their legs are all scrunched up.
FWIW the girls are 10 mos

It does not matter if their legs are scrunched up at all. The current recommendation is 2 years, based on the fact that before the age of 2 they are more likely to sustain a severe neck/spinal injury in a crash. This is due to physical development NOT weight or age.
As they get older they can simply bend their legs or cross them. Also, much better to have a broken leg than a broken neck or severed spinal cord in the event of a bad accident.
It's best to keep them RF as long as possible

The rec is 2 but it was 1. The min weight is 20lbs and the Max weight for rear is 40 lbs.
Do what you feel is best. I will turn my ds way before 40 cause he will be 20 before he hits that the way he gains. I will just use my judgement as a parent. It has been spot on so far so I'm going to keep trusting myself.

I turned my older DD around at 17 mos, but that was when the recommendation was 1 year (and 20 lbs). With the new recommendation being 2, I will be waiting till then to turn my LO.

I didn't turn my son FF until a month before his 4 th birthday. A child is 500 times safer when they are RFing!! And I only changed him because he outgrew his seat height wise.
The minimum is 2 years, but car seat techs and the National Highway Safety people recommend that the closer you can get to age 4 the better. At 10 months, the thought of changing them shouldn't even be crossing your mind!!
And their legs being scrunched up doesn't bother them at all. Their joints aren't fully formed. My son is now FF at 4.5, and when he goes to sleep in his seat, he'll still scrunch em up as if he was RFing. Lol.

My DS is 21m and big for his age and he is still rear facing, it is what is safest and since it is all he knows we are keeping it that as long as possible.

my DD is 26m today. we still rear face in my car (which is our primary car) because there is no real reason to switch. we front face in my DHs car because the seat we got for his car only forward faces, but just installed it when she turned 2. she has forward faced in my moms car since around 1 year old but it was not my preference but my mom only has her maybe once a month.

Exactly this! My boys are 3.5 and 19 months and are both still RF. My older one usually sits cross legged (and will occasionally stretch his legs up the seat back) and my younger one just bends his knees a bit. We plan to keep them RF as long as possible!

DD is 2 and I plan to keep her RF until her weight forces us to turn her. I think our seats allow for 40lb. RF.

We turned at 2. I wanted to keep DD rear facing longer, but the girl has BIG legs, meaning thick, and I found I had trouble tightening the harness properly when her legs were folded, so I turned the carseat in order to properly secure her.
For the carseat experts - or anyone else who may have had this issue - any ideas on how to keep RF and secure her properly?

Switched to a convertible seat around 7the months bc it was much more comfy for him than the infant one.
He is 22 months and still RF. I plan on keeping him this way for as long as possible. My hubby wants to turn him around at two, but I know he will respect my uneasiness on this issue and keep him rf.
I have gotten RIDICULED by family members, coworkers, and even strangers in a parking lot for keeping him RF. I have always been such a quite person, but now being a mommy, I snap back at anyone who judges my parental decisions

This exactly!!! A lot of people have no idea and seem to think it's a milestone. I see so many friends on FB posting pics of their child FF, saying "he/she is such a big boy/girl". When you know better you do better. DD will be the kid with the scrunched up legs RF as close to 4 as possible. Look into the group on FB, car seats for the littles. Someone on here had recommended it to me and I've learned so much from them.

I turned DS at 20 months. But that was before the new recommendation came out.. We would have kept him rear facing longer but that was IMPOSSIBLE in the Mustang we were driving while our van was in the shop for a week. His seat rear faced until 35lbs...

we stopped taking the carriers in and out of the car at 13m. but continued to use them till 18m. The girls were still within the weight/height but it was becoming difficult to strap them in bc there was very little play with the straps. We moved them to the convertible seats at 18m. I plan on keeping them rear facing for as long as the car seat will let them stay rear facing. I think our seat goes to 40lbs

this is what the lady who checked our carseats told us as well.

Also, when I had DC in RF seats (MANY, years ago  ), there were absolutely no reported cases of any RF child breaking any bones because they were RF, so the argument about "better a broken leg than a broken spine" is even more RF sided, since there haven't been any broken legs, but there have been way too many broken necks for too-young FF kids....
We turned both DC around 19 or 20 months, back when the recommendation was 1 year.
