Car Seat Family Debate
Sooo I am a bit frustrated and I am hoping I am not being "crazy"....
Next month we are going with family to Florida and bringing DS who is turning 2 this summer. Our relatives rented a car that we will all be using. They did not get a carseat. I brought it up and was told that the baby would just sit in the back with an adult and the seatbelt because he is "big" and he will be fine. Yes, he is tall for his age (in 3T clothes) and weighs about 32 lbs.
I mentioned that I am not ok with that and that I will take care of getting a carseat for the week. Its not really an argument because I am just going to handle it, I am not asking for anyone else to do anything.
But.....I am being told that I am being crazy and "overly cautious".
Anyone with me here? I know me and I just will not be comfortable driving around with DS not protected by the carseat, he is still so little. Yes, I am overprotective but I can't be the only one right?
What do you think?

I don't think you're being crazy. I think it would be careless not to get a car seat! Just bc you're in Florida there's less of a risk?? That's just silly

Buy your own carseat at Walmart or Target when you get there. They have ones that are $30ish

There is no debate. I believe it is illegal for a child that age to not be in some form of carseat. Forget comfort level. I would just bring it one. No discussion .

Child Car Seat Requirements
Florida law requires children under 5 years of age to be properly restrained no matter where they are seated in the vehicle. Children through age 3 must be secured in a separate carrier (child safety seat) or in a vehicle manufacturer's integrated child safety seat. For children ages 4 - 5, a separate carrier, an integrated child safety seat, or a safety belt may be used. If a safety belt does not fit the child correctly, a booster set should be used to correctly position the lap and shoulder belts once they outgrow forward facing child safety seats (generally at about 40 pounds and 4 years old). Children from approximately 40-80 pounds and under 4'9" in height should ride in a booster seat.
Violation of the child restraint law carries a fine of $60 and 3 points on the driving record.

Thank you for your responses! I had to post to show them that I am being normal!!
I keep hearing that its an "old school" mentality that carseats aren't that big of a deal. I have no idea how me and DH survived our childhoods lol
I was planning on taking care of it anyway, no questions asked. Theres no way I was going to drive around like that for 5 days. I found one for $39 on Walmart.com that looks great!
Whew.... its nice to hear that I am not the crazy one

not at all...there are MANY things that i'm old school about...but car seats aren't one of them. deaths from car accidents are no joke...the numbers are just too high to not take it seriously and progress to better safety solutions. there's a reason it's a law.

I tend to be very laid back about most things but this would never fly with me! Unless you have an 80 lb. 2 year old on your hands then there's no way that should be happening.

I am very serious about the carseat, I don't get how others can be so unconcerned with so many random accidents that happen.

omg thats insane!!!!!
AM has never been in a car without a car seat, I would freak out
I get that its old school. . . but my parents are a lot older and they have gotten used to the car seat and are now experts in installing it and buckling her in, things change, we got smarter!

WHAT!?!!!
Absolutely not! There is no way in HELLLLL I would ever let my child- big for their age or not- ride in a car for even a block- unless they were in an approved child seat.
You are not the crazy one- your family who suggested it are!
Not to mention- it's illegal.
Holy CRAP!! You would think in this day and age people would know better!

Well, not only do I think you are right because of safety, but it is also the LAW that your child must be in a car seat, so I'm not sure why anyone would be arguing with you about this or saying you are being overly cautious. That is just absolutely insane to me!!!!!!

They are crazy. Not you. I would never let my kids in a moving car not in a car seat. I get angry when I see parents in manhattan get in cabs without car seats. I even once saw a mom take her baby out of a car seat and get in the cab while the dad loaded the car seat and snap n go in the trunk.I just don't see why anyone would take the risk.

seeing as its against the law NOT to have them properly seated in a car seat, I'd say they are crazy and just shake my head.
I had the same drama when I decided to keep her RF after 1. My aunt said so-and-so has had their child in a booster since 3 and FF since 1. I refused. My coworkers (both with older children, one just 3yrs older than AJ) actually TEASED me, made fun of me and said stuff behind my back. Finally the report came out about the 2yr old thing and even tho I had shared tons of data with them, they had to see it in the news to 'get it'. One came over and said "wow, I'm sorry I didn't mean to make fun of you but I really though you were being just some crazy over cautious mama with a new baby" pfft  The other one only said "hey your kid, your choices, can't HURT to keep her safe, right?" That is as close to an apology as I got. Even tho I had to endure them walking backward to my desk "to be safe" and hey look a mirror for finally seeing your kid. 
Point is, just do what YOU want and try to let it slide off you.
