Poll:How many of you made sure you had a "nest egg" before ttc?
I ask because my friend was saying how you really need a "nest egg" before you ttc... however, I feel like in this day and age, saving is so difficult... what do you all think?

Is this "nest egg" for the baby? Or just your savings in general?

Just savings in general... like something to fall back on just incase of anything...

We have some "rainy day" money saved but I don't think we would have put off TTC if we hadn't any saved.

living on long island with the way housing costs and everything, i think if you wait to have a nest egg, you'll just never have children.

Living in LA where we are and planning on taking off about 8 months, I started a baby fund. I have saved over 10,000. There is no way my DH could pay our mortgage all by himself.

Please We would never conceive or try to if we waited. Every single person I know with children told us if you wait till you are fincially secure you will wait forever cause no one ever on LI anyway feels very secure unless they are making 500K + and thats few and far between.
As far as money goes, if you need and can afford childcare then a baby is pretty inexpensive. Its when they start school and needs books, supplies, bikes, toys, etc that the $$$ is needed. So one can save up if they are careful .

I have a profit sharing plan and a nice amount in that. But, if it wasn't for that, we wouldn't have much. I agree that it is very difficult to save.

So many people tell me the same thing about you'll never have kids if you wait for money... I was just wondering what you all thought... Would you consider a 401K a nest egg?

If we waited, we would never be able to have children. The way we see it is this - years ago people made it work with much less than what we have now. It will be a struggle but we will make it work whenever we are blessed with a baby.

I don't consider it a nest egg, since that $$ is for retirement, and I don't count it in what's saved. BUT it's nice to know, that in an emergency, I can borrow from mine pretty easily.
We don't have as much as I'd like, but DH is a tenured professor and I'm a tenured teacher so unless one of us does something REALLY repulsive, our jobs are safe, and that's a huge comfort.

We have a nest egg but not for TTC. And guess what? Just as I went off birth control, my car died and is in a state of disrepair. So we have to buy a new car. The nest egg has been reduced to a nest zygote. Great timing since I saw one of THESE last night:

  Good luck to you!

As far as saving, we have a little bit put away but I agree with the other posters, I don't think we are EVER going to feel 100% financially secure and having a baby is our dream. I think things always work out with $$$$.

I think it's important to have some money put away-- but to also just in general be financially responsible.

Re: Poll:How many of you made sure you had a "nest egg" before ttc?
We do... but we are not even TTC yet. If something goes wrong with the house, or my car, or if one of us is out of work... these are all things I worry about even before having a baby. For me we will definitley need and have a big nest egg when we TTC next year... but I know people (like my sister) that are doing fine without a nest egg! You can make it work. Personally, I am a planner and cannot live that way

We have a 6mos emergency fund, the rest goes to retirement as far as saving. I'm kinda like the others, TTC or not I can't live without the 'what if' money for emergencies, big or small.

Very bad idea to use a 401K early. Short term gain but in the long term a big loss.

DH is a financial planner so thankfully he's super organized about our finances and has set up our nest egg account which we both contribute to.
I was never good about my finances but I'm really trying to be more organized about my spending and disciplined about my savings.
