Update - since I could not decide, I ordered both 
I figured I would have DH give me the necklace for mother's day and the ring for my b-day next month.

The necklace is more mother-y, but the ring is really pretty. I vote ring, but I'm more of a ring person to begin with.

I say ring just because I don't like that style of necklace. That is a huge price gap though so I bet you could find an awesome mother's necklace well within that price range. In fact I would do that instead.
