the difference is that terrorists are people who kill because we are American, period, not bc they are mentally ill but bc they want to see Americans suffer bc they are American.
I have no sympathy for Adam Lanza or any homicidal lunatic but a terrorist evokes a slightly different emotion in me.
Domestic terrorism is the unlawful use, or threatened use, of force or violence by a group or individual based and operating entirely within the United States or Puerto Rico without foreign direction committed against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof in furtherance of political or social objectives.
So to me, if you take out the part of the definition that says "coerce a government" and "political", I'd definitely say Adam Lanza, Timothy McVeigh, and the other Americans who terrorized their victims and this country are terrorists as well.
Just the way I see it.
I agree.
It makes me very uncomfortable that the govt can pick and choose which American citizens are entitled to legal rights/due process, and which aren't when they are committing similar crimes. If he wasn't a citizen it would be a different story completely.
Don't get me wrong. I feel no sympathy for him. I want him to pay.
At the least I am very curious as to how they treat this...I wonder if this will set a precedent because I don't remember anything happening before that is similar (in terms of who he is, what he did etc).

No - I have ZERO sympathy, ZERO for someone who deliberately hurts another human being - I am not interested in what hardships you've endured, how your parents treated you, who bullied you ........Boo hoo for you.
There is right, and there is wrong - and no matter how sick or twisted you are, you KNOW that what you're doing is wrong, and you do it anyway ........
Anyone who deliberately shoots, blows up, poisons etc. another human will not get any sympathy for me - I'm not interested what made him FEEL he had to do what he did - and he's NOT a 'normal' college kid - Normal people don't put a bomb at your feet, look you in the eye, and walk away ..........

I don't feel bad for him. I'm not in favor of torture, and I do think everything related to his prosecution needs to be by the book (Miranda, etc.) so that a civil rights lawyer looking to get famous can't get him off because of a loophole. Then I hope he lives a long, long miserable life in solitary.
I do feel bad for the immigrant and Muslim communities. It's terrible that we scapegoat them. Look at the uncle- he comes here, works hard, loves what he was able to do and appreciates it. I like to think the majority of immigrants are like him. And the vast majority of Muslims are peaceful and do not support violence. I used to teach in a school with a lot of Muslim students, and when bin Laden was killed we were discussing it and when I mentioned he was Muslim, those kids got very upset with me. They said he wasn't Muslim because he didn't live his life the way their faith expected. I thought that was really interesting and I'm sure they weren't the only ones who feel that way.
I love you right now...Im not muslim, but I have a lot of muslim friends and have immigrant parents, and it just really hurts to hear so many Americans over generalizing and hating a certain group because of the acts of one group. Its so unfair...

I hope he gets the maximum penalty available. However, I think he should be afforded the same rights my other US citizen would under similar circumstances. Otherwise, this sets quite a dangerous precedent.

When its a case of National Security, by law, they have the ability to withhold reading and offering of miranda rights. In this case, our country's safety takes precedence.
Comes down to that this guy may know about more crimes against our society and they have to get that info out of him asap to protect the most amount of people.

I understand that. In fact, Miranda is not an explicit constitutional right but rather a right created by the courts. Nevertheless, iit is a grey area to determine if there is still a continuing threat and it can be said of many crimes. Many prominent defense are attorneys have discussed on air how their use of this exception is tenuous at best. I would be concerned with having the case thrown out on a technicality/constitutional issue.

Jeff Bauman, the guy who lost both his legs and whose pic was all over the place with his torn off legs showing, was the one who ID'd the younger brother. Said he placed the bag right at Jeff's feet, looked him in the eyes and walked away. He is seen calmly walking away on another surveillance tape after the bomb went off. He went out partying after, that is not someone who is remorseful.
That is pure evil.
6 people from my hometown, friends of my brother and cousin, were injured in the attack, 3 of them severely. I have zero sympathy for this monster.
agreed, I am not remotely sad for him.
Just playing devil's advocate here, but why didn't Bauman get alarmed at this right away? If someone walked up to me and left a bag unattended I would have contacted the police right away. With all the "see something, say something" campaigns that was the first thing I thought about when I read this....I guess in hindsight he would have? This is defintely a lesson learned for all of us. You are better off saying alerting the police just to be safe.... Anyway, I do not feel bad for the bomber, 19 or not, you know the difference between right and wrong, he needs to be punished to the letter of the law.

I was in pathmark this past Sunday and on the way out there were 2 men speaking Arabic at the doorway buying from the lotto machine. Some dbag walked in past them, heard them speaking and said loudly "I dont think this is the time you should be speaking Arabic" I was stunned to say the least. I was pissed and felt bad for those men that it was directed towards. People are ignorant!

Yes.. I definitely want to know what happened to turn the younger brother. From all accounts he seemed like a normal American teenager.. Even became a citizen on 9-11-12..
It also plagues me about the older brother- married to an American and raising a 3 year old... How could he put the backpack behind someone else's child when he was a father
eta- I wanted to add that in no way am I sympathetic to him, I just have a morbid curiosity to understand how this happens that someone seemingly normal turns- but then of course, maybe he was just a sociopath and was never what he seemed. And of course, my sympathies only lie with the victims
I agree with the above and another thing I don't understand is that his American wife does not want to speak directly with investigators and only through her attorney. It makes me wonder if she knew anything.

This is not him thought!!! He walked away with his hat still on, he wasn't hurt or anything. It's not his older brother either, because the brother wore khaki pants.

Oh really? I didn't know that, I had just seen that picture plastered all over the place, so it's like the first image that comes to my mind when I think of them.
BUT I still feel it's in horrible taste to play devil's advocate and try to place ANY blame on not only a victim, but ultimately a witness who helped us catch these maniacs. Honestly, i wouldn't have ran immediately to the police...If it were where any amount of time, yes, but a few minutes? No, I'd have looked around for the guy who dropped it, wondering if he ran into someone/a store.

Horrible taste, eh? I think that in the throws of a discussion that it is ok to be brought up. I certainly did not place any blame on the victim, at least that is not my intention. Like I said, if we can learn anything from this horrific tragedy is that when in doubt, speak up and say something. [I

I am sure it happened so fast and no one would think THIS would happen. He probably thought the person who dropped the bag was saving a spot or coming back to that spot. Who would ever think THIS would happen?

From what I read, it was 2 and a half minutes later that the bomb went off from when it was placed on the ground.
I admit...when I initially read that I was like "wow, i would have hauled out of there ASAP when I saw it being placed" (regarding Jeff Baumann making eye contact and seeing the bag left) but in all honesty, you just never ever know what you'd do or how you'd feel. Most people prob wouldn't make an immediate connection or feel threatened at first.
It's just so sad anyway you look at it.

I am sure that will be Jeff Bauman's struggle going forward with the thought knowing that he could have done things differently.

I am sure it happened so fast and no one would think THIS would happen. He probably thought the person who dropped the bag was saving a spot or coming back to that spot. Who would ever think THIS would happen?
Yes probably. But now going forward after this incident, I feel like people will be a LOT more leery of anyone leaving a bag/package and walking away. 20/20 hindsight.

I was not angry at that 19 year old boy, I didn't want to torture or kill him, I felt sadness..
You and I couldn't be further apart in our feelings.
