Horrible mommy moment- need to get off my chest

DD just turned 2 and is the cutest, smartest little thing in the world but she is a terror! She's into everything and so fast. Today we were at the dr.'s office and she was not in a stroller (medical reason). I also had 5 yr. old DS with me. We had just come in and I bent down to unzip his jacket and she ran off full speed ahead to the elevator and pushed the button, it opened immediately and she went in! I ran faster than I have ever run in my life and got there as the doors were closing. The front part of the door opened but the door right behind it closed with DD inside. It happened so fast. I screamed and pushed the button on the wall and thank god it opened right up. I grabbed her and yelled at her and cried. It was terrifying for me and I felt like the worst mom in the world. Just needed to get it off my chestChat Icon I swear if I ever need to go somewhere again when she won't be in a stroller, I will have her where one of those backpack harnesses. I never want to feel that way again.

You're still a good mom. When I was 3 I did that to my mom when we were in Disney World (at the hotel). She didn't get me before the doors closed and I ended up on a different floor! Chat Icon BUT she's still the best mom to me.

Re: Horrible mommy moment- need to get off my chest

You are not a bad mom. When I was a kid apparently I wandered off at a department store. My mom was in the bedding department and she said she was taking her time, and asked me to sit still. Back then Macys had a toy department. I was sitting in a pile of toys that were displayed on the floor. They locked down the store to look for me. It took them a while apparently to notice I was not a doll. My response to her when she asked me why I wandered off was that I told her I was going right next door to look at the toys. So do not feel badly.

Don't feel bad!! that is a good story to tell her when she is older! I am sure you were scared, kids are crazy and unpredictable sometimes, regardless of what a great mommy they have! BTW I haven't had my dc in a stroller since they were like 1.5!

How scary?!! Chat Icon

I think kids like your DD are the reason harnesses were invented. It's about SAFETY! Get one and don't feel bad about it! Chat Icon

Chat Icon How scary! You are not a bad mommy!! It can happen to any one of us.

I did that to my mom when I was very young but at the subway. We were standing in a crowded train and I ran off the train when it stopped. She tried to grab me and run after me but the doors closed before she could get off. Thankfully a woman found me wandering and brought me to a police officer who waited with me until my mom was able to return and get me. Now that I'm a mother, I can only imagine how terrifying and awful that must have been for my mom.

OMG! How scary!

To the OP, you are not a bad mom at all. These lil munchkins are so strong willed they just go go go!

We were at Prospect Park this weekend and there was a kid's DJ and lots of kids dancing around. I had younger DD with me and older DD was with my husband, or so I thought. He came over to me and said..."where's M?" It literally felt like time stood still. It was SOO crowded I had no idea how we'd find her. He saw the horrified look in my eyes and just RAN. He found her literally 10 seconds later but holy hell it was scary.

Oh man I can completely sympathize. My girls will be 2 in May and they are both runners. One worst that the other but I have backpack leashes for both of them. I know EXACTLY how you feel. I don't think you are a bad mom AT ALL! My husband blames my devious and clever children on having too much DHA during my pregnancy LOL

If you ever want to have a play date and commiserate I have lots and lots of toddler toys in my back yard, it's all set up for them, I call it Trayland and it's got 6' fences with locks :o)

Re: Horrible mommy moment- need to get off my chest

OMG You are not the worst mom!! you love your child and take care of your child.
I am not sure which part you feel bad about - the fact that she got in the elevator -they are fast little bugger and you had two children - so give your self some credit.
The fact that you yelled at her - everything can't be rosey they need to know there are consequences for their actions.
We all loose it and taking off in an elevator is a good reason. what if it was a train!
