Looking for some suggestions on moving OOS with pets

We are moving to FL in May. The move came unexpectedly so I have conviced my mother to come to help me with the 3 kids.
Between us and her we have 6 cats. I really want to take them but here's the thing
We don't have room for them in our truck and we cannot afford to hire a company to transport them for us.
Are there any other options ? I don't want to be the one who leaves their pets behind because we are moving but I'm not sure what our options are .

I'm assuming you and and a husband driving down, can one of you rent a car and drive the cats down? You have to start actively trying to find them homes now, maybe some of them will get adopted.

I hope that you don't leave your cats behind to die.

It's myself, DH, my 3 kids and my mother. I am more than willing to find them homes but I am nervous about finding the right home for all 6 ( separately)
I do not plan to leave them to die or put them in a shelter to die.
I just need some options

Re: Looking for some suggestions on moving OOS with pets

I wonder if you can find some way to board some of the cats at the vet's office while transporting maybe some of the cats and rehoming some of the others? I know it can be expensive, but maybe if you explain the situation to the vet they can work out some sort of pricing with you and maybe even help you rehome them. The other thing would be to have either you or your hubby drive down in a rental car with the cats that you are taking with you.

I moved to Florida this past November, but I only had my dog to move and I flew with her. I think if I had to take more that one animal with me, I would have to drive them down.

I was thinking maybe to fly some of them. Is it expensive ?

When I moved down here I flew my dog in the carrier on Jetblue and it was $100 one way. You can only take one animal per passenger though, but there may be other airlines that will allow you to fly more than one in cargo, but even then, its pretty expensive, I think over $100 per pet.

I don't understand. So you are giving away your cats because you cant figure out a way to transport them? Put them in the car and drive them down. Rent a large van if you have to.

Re: Looking for some suggestions on moving OOS with pets

The previous owner of my home had 4 cats and moved OOS. She was in her 60s and drove, ALONE, with her 4 cats, to her new home many hours away. She and the cats made it just fine. Either you fly your pets or driving is what you have to do. You will need crates. I imagine you also may have 2 cars or more that need to go down. The cats go in crates in the cars with you or you ship your cars down somehow if you have cars and rent a van that can fit all people and pets and take turns driving. Or take 2 vehicles and 2 adults drive and follow each other. Or one vehicle being yours if there is only one and one rented so the cats can come. Chat IconI find it kind of odd to rehome a pet due to a one time drive issue that can easily be done.

Get a trailer hitch or something and put some of your stuff outside so your cats can fit in the truck.

ITA, where there is a will, there is a way. I would rent a car and drive separately to take the cats with me or I would rent a big enough vehicle to include all members of my family, pets included.

There are dog rescue transporter people that charge pretty low rates to move dogs from the south to up here in the north. When they are heading back down their vans/trailers are virtually empty. One transporter I know charges 125 per dog and 75 per puppy. I would think it would be at most 75 per cat.

I agree with previous poster, I would rent a trailer from u-haul and tow down your stuff so there is room for the cats. If not then I would rent a mini van or something or find a dog rescue transporter that is heading south.

I would even go as far as to say put 2 cats in each carrier so then you only need to fit 3 carriers. They may be squished but I think it is crazy to leave your pets behind because of a one way move.

We moved to FL and back with 4 cats and a dog. Your stuff can go in a trailer and your animals go in the car. Stack the crates and stop every couple of hours to make sure they are ok. When you stop at a hotel at night make sure the place is animal friendly and bring disposable litter boxes. Getting rid of your animals bc you are moving is animal abuse in my opinion.

+1

My cats do better when they're together in the carrier than they do separated. They're squished but I think they prefer it for the comfort.

Re: Looking for some suggestions on moving OOS with pets

Ok one I'm not looking to get rid of my cats! two i cannot put them in my truck for several reasons. I have 2 kids in carseats in my third row and a NB in the second I will need to access him throughout the trip to feed him since he is a NB. There needs to be 2 people in our truck in order to take care of my kids and drive at the same time.
My mother is taking her car but cannot fit all 6 cats in her car and putting more than one in a carrier is not an option since only 2 of the 6 get along well.
We are renting a trailer for our stuff already. So our stuff is not the problem.
I am here looking for options on how to get them there not get reemed by LIF people for what they "think" I'm trying to do.
I looked into professional transport and they want 4000$.
I contacted a rescue group to see if they could help and I am waiting to hear back.
If you have helpful responses that would be appreciated
Edited to add I have an expedition and with the third row up there is little to no room behind it.

You can probably put two carriers on the floor under the car seats in the third row. Put the two that get along in one carrier, one in the other, that is three. Then put the other 3 cats in mom's car. If that won't work, then
I would FM Traysee and ask if she has contact info for the transport groups she refers to.

Why can't your mom stack crates in her back seat? Can't 6 smaller crates fit stacked in a back seat? Or like tara said at least 2 small crates should fit on a floor. The rest go with mom. The cost of 6 small crates would be peanuts compared to shipping the cats, renting a van, etc.

Or you ship a car down and rent a van to accomodate the cats.

Re: Looking for some suggestions on moving OOS with pets

Shipping a car costs about $1500, I looked into it when I was moving but wound up having relatives drive it down. Shipping it and then having your mom drive a van or something bigger down with the cats in the crates is a cheaper option than the $4k to ship the cats.

There has to be a cheaper option to ship the cats than $4k.

I'd put the two that get along together. Put those behind your seat on the floor, put another one in a crate on the other side. The kids could put their feet on the crates if need be. Figure out which 2 can tolerate each other. Put those in a crate in your mom's car on the floor and do the same with the other. They will be fine. They may be annoyed and pissy when you get to FL but it will save you money. If your mom is driving by herself put one crate on the passenger side floor and stack that one or put the other on the seat but make sure to seat belt that crate. Crating would be the cheapest way and best way for you to be able to check on them at stops. Just don't take them out at stops bc they will be freaked out and will probably run If you find space us tight mail a couple of boxes down to FL of light weight things like comforters or clothes to free up room.

How about renting a larger truck and towing moms car or adding a second smaller trailer to moms car? Or adding a bigger trailer to your truck. What about putting a carrier on the floor in front of each car seat and stacking them and getting the smallest carriers you can, so they take up less room? Have DH drive the rental and you drive your truck. That will get you lots more room and then you can do bigger cages for the cats so they can fit a litter box.

I will ask my rescue group and the transporters I know and see if anyone go as far as FL. You can try contacting cat rescue groups in florida and see if they have transporters that go this far or you could also maybe pass off from one transporter to another. The ones I know go to Georgia, you might be able to have 1/2 the trip with one transporter and 1/2 the trip with another. KWIM?

How stressed would the cats be on a 20 hour drive?
And what do I do about poo and pee?

You can talk to your vet about stress but I think it's just unavoidable but it is what it is.. disposable litter boxes and towels in the carrier but I would also wait to feed and water them until you get to your hotel to sleep. I got you a number for a pet rescue transport who goes to FL her name is Tammy. The rescue I deal with gave me her number and told you to call right away because she doesn't go every week:

You can get off your high horse because every poster who read the original post and others following took the posts the same way, that the OP could not afford to ship the cats and as bad as she feels about leaving them behind or rehoming them that is the likely option. OP mentioned rehoming herself in another post. If she had no intention of rehoming the cats that would have been stated. Go back and read the posts again.

Glad that posters came through with solutions to the problem and I hope it works out.
