? for those who feel they eat unhealthy

If you looked at me, I look healthy. I am a good height/weight. I don't have high blood pressure or cholesterol but I eat terrible. I love to go out to eat and rarely cook. If I eat home I eat a english muffin or make a english muffin pizza etc. This stems from my Mom who always had us on the go. She rarely cooked and if anything, BBQ'd a lot.
Now that I have DS I want to do whats best but I assume I have to change my eating habits? I can't imagine eating a hostess cupcake but handing him a piece of bread and hummus... So...If you feed your child only organic or don't let them eat sweets etc, did you change your lifestyle? DS is 1 so he is eating everything now. I don't know how to change my way of life after 32 years Chat Icon

Re: ? for those who feel they eat unhealthy

I have a terrible sweet tooth and love junk food. DH is adamant about our girls eating healthy. Honestly, I just don't eat those things in front of her. (Actually with 2 kiddies now I don't eat much when they are awake. lol.) After DH and I have our dinner and the girls are sleeping I definitely allow myself some ice cream or chocolate etc. Don't get me wrong, she's had sweets and cake and cookies, we just try to them "special treats".

I never really worried about what I was eating until I got married!

After having my first, I only fed him organic food and homemade baked goods for the most part. We do make exceptions of course (like at a friend's house, out to eat, etc).

Now with #2 and #3 also eating regular food, we've gone almost entirely organic. I don't eat anything in front of my kids that I wouldn't want them eating... which is also why sometimes you can find me hiding in the corner with chocolate Chat Icon

Re: ? for those who feel they eat unhealthy

i just started changing my eating habits. I am trying to focus on "whole foods" only. We all (even DH) eat the same food, i don't think it works otherwise. I would say only eat differently when they are not around - if you are out without them or after they go to sleep. But of course it benefits you also to eat healthier and to be honest i don't crave as much junk (chocolate addict here!! Chat Icon ) after starting to eat healthier. i've found other things i crave and love now - for instance organic peanut butter on whole wheat. I hated PB and just started eating it and LOVE it now!!! i have it everyday for breakfast.

HAHA! Thats funny. I was able to go completely dairy free for 9 months when I was BF'ing. I can't seem to do it for myself. I was able to do it when I knew it effected DS Chat Icon

I used to eat unhealthy, but you would never know it by looking at me. I never drank water (only coke and juice), ate candy and chips everyday, fast food, etc. Eating this way will eventually catch up with you in the long run in the form of a chronic illness such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, Alzheimer's, etc.

Then, I learned about the state of the US food system and was utterly shocked. Big ag and multi billion dollar food companies are literally poisoning us and our children. I know it sounds extreme, but when you have researched and learned the information that I have, you cannot bury your head in the sand and continue that way of life. Once you change your mentality, it is easier to eat healthy.

This is a great blog to start with:

Same story for me! Wow, I'm always surprised to find we share many of the same "extreme" views (for this site anyway) and now to learn the path to becoming this way is similar.

The whole family shares the same lot of food, we don't keep "crap" in the house and eat minimal amounts of processed food anyway. We make treats family outing- froyo, cake at the bakery ect.

And in the interest of full disclosure since I work, I tend to sneak an extra goody at work now and then Chat Icon

I actually ate better/cooked more once the kids came along and were eating.

Before kids, I would just order in. We both worked late & couldnt be bothered cooking.
A bottle of wine & italian delivery was good with me! :)

But once we had kids, ordering in became tricky/more expensive.

I liked veggies... I wanted to make sure I didnt end up with the kid that only ate 4 things and didnt touch a veggie.

I steam veggies every night.
I vary the dinners and they will eat almost all of it. My lifestyle automatically changed because I was cooking for them now.

Doesnt mean I dont sneak chips or chocolate in the kitchen once in a while.
I buy organic when I can.

This for me too. Except 1 girl and 1 baby on the way.

I want to add that we try not to keep crap in the house b/c we know we will eat it. If we do have it it's after she goes to bed. We are trying to change our ways like wheat instead of white, only buy meat from whole foods, etc.

Its hard after eating unhealthy from birth practically.

I did this too... but I started to realize how hypocritical of me it was to be doing this - and how I really wanted to be eating healthier too. The best way to cut out the junk was to stop buying it. If there was no package of oreos, or ices creamI couldn't eat them. They are now "special treats" for me as well. It has been really hard to this (I mean look at my SN LOL) but I am glad I have been.

Re: ? for those who feel they eat unhealthy

This is my parental failure - I fully admit to it.

My DH eats like CRAP, my kids eat like him, no matter how hard I have tried to get them to eat healthier - How can you tell a kid that he has to eat veggies when Daddy won't touch ANYTHING green?

In my house, 'healthy' means they ate eggs instead of waffles for breakfast.

I try my best to cook the 'crap' that they'll eat (ie: I make homemade mac & cheese w/ real ingredients instead of the stuff from a box) but in the end, they're hardly eating 'healthy' Chat Icon

Re: ? for those who feel they eat unhealthy

I make it a point to eat healthy. My son does not eat candy, ice cream seldomly and sweets are only the ones I make from scratch. I eat this way and so does my dh. The only think that I can't stand for my son to eat is salad dressing. This is awful stuff but until I get dh to stop using it, it's impossible to get ds to use something different. He wants to be just like daddy. Chat Icon
