If you skipped rice cereal, what was DC's first food?

DS2 is about to turn 6 months. I'm trying to decide whether to start with oatmeal, banana, avocado or maybe something else. I plan to make most of the baby food.

What food did you introduce first and why?

I did oatmeal first since it seemed a lot of people disliked rice. DD wasn't a fan at first at all. After a few days I tried banana and then squash. It took about a week for her to get the hang of it even starting at 6 months. Once we got going though I added new foods every 3-4 days just depending on what I made, bought, or felt like giving. She wasn't picky!

Re: If you skipped rice cereal, what was DC's first food?

I started with oatmeal because DS had bad constipation issues as a baby
I also started sweeter vegetables first.. rather than start with fruits

Re: If you skipped rice cereal, what was DC's first food?

Ped told me to start with oatmeal so thats what I did... Dd absolutely loves it... I then did bananas... She was ok with them but they tend to make her constipated. She loves applesauce but it gives her the same prob... She likes pears and that's good for constipation so that's always my go to fix...

Eta: dd hated avocado... Like to the point of gagging... I never tried it again...

for avocado you might need to either puree it finer or mix it with banana. DD liked it but the texture was too weird for her at first. it was hard for her to coordinate getting it off her tongue which made her gag. when i mixed it with banana she LOVED it and wolfed it down.

Re: If you skipped rice cereal, what was DC's first food?

We skipped all cereals with DD and went straight to orange veggies at 5/6 months.

From what research I did, there was no need to give her cereal at all, it's just empty calories. IMO, she was better off getting the vitamins and benefits from fruits and veggies as the bulk of her nutrition came from formula at that time anyway.

Re: If you skipped rice cereal, what was DC's first food?

I just started DS on Oatmeal, he is 5 months. He hates it but I tried it for the full week to test for allergies. I am going to move to fruits next week. I'm not sure what I am going to start w/ b/c I am making my own food w/the baby bullet so I need to dig it out and see what is looking good in the super market.

Re: If you skipped rice cereal, what was DC's first food?

We did rice just for a week- to make sure she wasn't allergic- but it bound her up so bad that we never went back
Oatmeal was great.
I'd start with that if you want to skip the rice
