Baby A in 2nd percentile.. won't drink more than 3.5 oz

So at the last checkup, baby A was 9.2 lbs, baby B was 11.5 lbs. Baby A is in the 2nd percentile Chat Icon The Dr didnt seem concerned but asked us to try spreading the feedings during the day. We typically feed every 3 hours and he wants us to try and strethc to 4. We did ok with it today but BabY A wont take anymore... B moved from 4.5 oz to 6 oz when we did that today. A moved from 3 to 3.5. And it was a struggle..

Any advice??? If you dont know her history, she has reflux/colic and is currently drinking allimentum and taking .75 ml zantac

TIA!

ETA they are 13 weeks

i'm not a professional, but maybe a little cereal in her bottle?

ETA: this may help her reflux and help her gain some weight. i, however, would speak to your ped about it.

I actually asked about this-I think its really good advice. He told me he doesnt want me putting cereal in her bottle. He said the only time she should eat cereal is from a bowl/spoon and we're not starting that til next month.
Thanks so much for responding... I was thinking the same thing Chat Icon

My little one never ate much at a time. He is almost 1 now and still usually takes only 5 oz never more at a time. You have the other baby to compare to but all babies are different. As long as baby is growing steadily, my baby was premature 3 lbs something oz and grew at his own pace so doctors were not too concerned. it will be easier i think to gain when they start food.

Thanks, that's helpful. She was also tiny/premature and a full lb smaller than her sister. It's so hard not to compare but their builds are comletely different.

My doctor always tells me as long as DD remains on her own growth curve it's ok. I wouldn't add cereal to her bottle. I'm sure it's hard not to compare her to her twin, but if she started out smaller too it's probably even better not to compare. I bf so I did demand feeding, but could you do that with her since she's small feed her more often even if it's smaller, maybe that would be better for her reflux too?

Re: Baby A in 2nd percentile.. won't drink more than 3.5 oz

My DD is 6 months and still rarely drinks more than 3.5 oz at a time, and lately, even less. Granted, it has been stressing me out for months, but she keeps gaining weight, and has pretty much maintained her growth curve, so I try to keep that in mind. Although it's easier said than done, if the doctor isn't worrying, you shouldn't either (says the Queen Worrier). Keep in mind that babies who have reflux often only eat small amounts at a time. The feeding therapist who I spoke to today says that they've learned that eating is not pleasurable, so they eat very little at each sitting.

Re: Baby A in 2nd percentile.. won't drink more than 3.5 oz

My twin 1 is my good eater and only eats 3.5. Sometimes less. She is in the 3rd percentile at 6 weeks. She is 9 weeks now so idk what she gained. They made me nuts with her eating enough in the nicu. I gave up. As long as they are gaining they are fine. In my mkn medicsl opinikn)

Is your DD gaining?

My other twin is 2 oz heavier and in the 5th percentile but just eats 3 oz and spits up most bottles. Go figure.

I also think with twins and premies they just need time to catch up and their bellies to grow to be able to eat more.

No stupid questions when it comes to being a mommy! I just meant that she should be maintaining her percentile and not having any sharp declines from month to month.

Nothing is more stressful than being told your baby isn't eating enough. My 1st DD was hospitalized at 10 days old for lethargy. She essentially slept for 24 hours straight- didn't eat, barely opened her eyes, etc. Thank g-d it turned out to be nothing but part of the doctor's concern was that she wasn't eating enough. The pressure of being told that your baby HAS to eat a certain amount at a feeding essentially ensures that your child will NOT eat that amount. I think your child can feel your stress. If your baby is growing steadily and appropriately, don't be concerned. Percentiles are useless. I was underweight and short my whole life. I never "made" the charts. And I'd like to think I'm no worse the wear for it. I promise- your babies will eat and they will be fine!

This was why I basically broke my DD out of the nicu. They wanted to keep her because she would eat the required 45 ml or more then randomly eat just 38 ml. They kept threatening me that she would be back in the hospital. I tried their feeding tactics when she came home and she was visibly upset that I was forcing her. So I let her do her thing and now she is the better eater. She gained 2 lb in a month and just made it onto the charts at 6 weeks.

Re: Baby A in 2nd percentile.. won't drink more than 3.5 oz

why is the percentile so important? You have twins... all games off. I'm sure they were smaller at birth then most singletons babies. If the Dr. is not concerned then I would try not to stress about it.

Do your best not to compare your girls! I know it is hard, but they are 2 different people. If you only had Baby A, her only going up 1/2 an ounce would not be a big deal because you would not have a direct comparison.

If it makes you feel better... my girls are still not on the weight or height chart and are only in the single digits for head size. They are very happy and healthy girls. More advanced in some skills then their actual age and also less advanced in some skills then their adjusted age. and NONE of those skills do they have together. My Dr office does not adjust. I do not remember what week they were born in, but it all makes a difference.

That great that she made it on to the chart. As long as she's growing I wouldn't worry about it. Neither of my kids ever drank more than 3.5-4oz at a time. Ones a peanut and the other is off the charts.

Both my twins were always below the chart - not even the 1st percentile. They ate until they were full, and were juts fine. Is she following her own curve? That's what is important - not the actual number.
They are very happy and healthy almost 4 year olds now.

DD is 6 month and has always and still drinks about that much. She will at times drink 5oz but I was told that if she is maintaining weight and her growth is steady on the chart and not jumping up/down then we are ok. I hear from friends that their kids are drinking 6oz and are sleeping thru the night... not my kid and thats ok.

As long as she hasn't dropped from a high percentile to a low one, I wouldn't be too concerned. My older one was always 5o-75% for weight. My younger one s always between 4-8%. But he's almost 3 years old and he's always just been this way.

Re: Baby A in 2nd percentile.. won't drink more than 3.5 oz

My DD is 11 weeks (4 weeks adjusted - she was a 33 weeker) - she's not even on the chart yet. 8 pounds 4 ounces this week. She had a great birth weight 5.4 but has struggled since. She was re-admitted at 4 weeks old for dehydration and failure to thrive (it was during the hurricane, I couldn't pump much and we had trouble keeping her warm) - she was dx'd with reflux and Sandifers. We switched to nutramigen and started Zantac.
Anyway ... I say all this because other than weekly weight checks none of the drs are concerned. It's stressful though! She won't take more than 3 oz and that's with aggressive feeding. My 1 week old nephew is taking 6 oz!
Hang in there!

DD was 4 months before she drank more than 2 oz at a time. She was always in like the 6th percentile. She stayed small until about 9 months, when we routinely fed solids. At that time she was also able to use a sippy, so we sent a cup to bed w her at naps and at night ( I know, bad mom) she's now at the 35th percent, which I'm completely happy with.

I was sooooo worried for so long about her size, especially since at 5'10 I'm super tall. The Dr was never worried and it all worked out in the end!

My DS is also 13 weeks and we just went to his 3 mo checkup... He dropped from 2% to 1% weighing in at 10lb 10oz. Dr isn't concerned since he has gained every month but he is a peanut. He is a great eater though and we haven't supplemented with formula as of yet. I am EBF.

If your girls are happy I wouldn't worry. Chat Icon
