DH and I go out often - We are very fortunate
Either my parents, my sister, my Sister or Brother in Law
(my sister, SIL & BIL we don't ask often at all)
We also have a really really sweet girl who is the teach in the infant room @ Daycare. She had both Sean & Colin so we have known her 3 years.

My mom or dad, or my il's. My sister has on occasion.
I've had a sitter a few times with no issues. But it's someone I've known for years and trust completely.

my parents. i will ask my sister if need be but that's only happened once. we avoid asking MIL since she helps out during the work week.

My mom, or my inlaws have in the past. Now it's to the point, if my mom can't watch, we don't go out. We have not gone out in a long time. we have never had a sitter

If it's a weekend night- always my MIL. If it's something she'll be at too, then my sister. We went away for 2 nights over the summer for our anniversary and we had a close friend of ours watch them over night and used my mom/MIL during the day. I would trust my one BIL, but he's too nervous to do it by himself, so my MIL always joins him. I don't trust to find a stranger and I don't know ANY trustworthy teenagers...lol

My mom, and very rarely my bro and SIL - don't feel comfy with sitters yet (DS is 2) and I feel bad asking friends.
I had a girl from daycare that I really loved and trusted who watching him a couple times but she moved

We barely go out, only because our parents/family acts like babysitting is a burden. They are in the, "I raised my kids already" state of mind 
So, if we ask we are made to feel bad and often times silly excuses are made anyway....so we pay a sitter when we have an event or when we are desperate for a date night...which isn't enough for us, but we try to deal 
ETA. Any sitter I have paid isn't a stranger, they either are a family friend of some sort of come highly recommended from a friend.

Mil or my parents. On rare occasions, Ive used ds daycare teachers daughter. Ds loves her, shes an older 16 yr old, and super responsible.
