Counting to 100

At what age are most children able to count from 1 to 100?

And at what age are they typically able to recognize numbers, eg knowing that"67" is "sixty-seven?"

ETA:
To answer my own question -
DS is 3yrs 2months old (38 months) and can count from 1 to 100 correctly, he can count by 100's and 1000's, he can recognize numbers eg knows, 59 is "fifty-nine" and if you sit him at the computer with a blank document(started this week), he can type out the numbers 1-100 and anything you ask in between. I thought he was a little young to be able to do this. I guess he is. He is able to do a couple of other things I think he's a bit young for, just wondering if this is something I should foster and if so, how?

Just the other day I was at my DD's kindergarten parent/teacher conference and evidently it's a kindergarten milestone. In fact, they were tested on it. The teacher said not all kids at this age can necessarily recognize the numbers but my kid does.

As for when she (or my other DD) started counting to 100...ummm...I have no idea. Chat Icon

Re: Counting to 100

It is a kindergarten/1st grade milestone that DS was tested on. He can count by 10s to 100 and unassisted to 90. He left the 91-99 out and went to 100. But when we did it at home he could do it by himself. They are apparently supposed to only know 1-20 so his teacher was not worried and said that he knew more than the rest of his class for unprompted counting.

bumping for more

Just curious as to when most children are actually able to do this to help settle a question I have in my mind

Counting to 100

When I looked into Kindergarten must haves it was on the list. I about died! AJ can easily count up to 30 but just doenst CARE about the other numbers. She knows them though. She can count up to I think 40 in tens. Fifty & Sixty sound too close for her. same with 15/16 they seem to make her stumble.

I was concerned because the teacher said she didn't like numbers and refuses to sit with it. She'll pull out the 'work' and do it once, then put it away. However if told to go grab 5 tens/50 or grab 7 tens and a five/75 she can and will (they use beadwork to represent numbers). Then out of the blue we were watching TV and she said "that's fifty-five, right mama" and I looked up and said "yep" then two seconds later turned around and said "YES, sweetie it is 55! Good job!" freaked me OUT!

I'm trying HARD not to push her on numbers. I hated the way math was taught to me but I was very good with math itself. So I want to let her show me what makes it work for her. I let school do their part and I practice if given some tools to practice with her but never up to high numbers.

Im TOLD it will come and it will be done by the time she's out of kinder. I have seen her learn so much so quickly that I just have to believe it to be true.

She's 4 now.
I assume by the time she's 5 and a half she'll know all her numbers up to 100 consistently. As well as everything else they will teach her in Kindergarten.

I actually remember being "tested" in kindergarten. We had to sit with the teacher and count to 100.

Re: Counting to 100

By the end of the year in kindergarten. It's one of the state standards her in NC.

DD can count to 100, but often has a couple bumps along the way. She can count by 10s, that is another standard by year end.

Since my kid held off until AFTER her second bday to actually start talking in anyway real form of communication, I would have been over the MOON if she counted to 3!!!! when she was 2.

To be fair to quickly caught up, it still feels odd those first two years for her were 'silent' if you will.

DD is 4 1/2 and in preschool 5 days a week. She can count to 100 with a little help, she usually forgets 30 for some reason. it's not expected of her yet though.

My DS was like this at age 3. Now he's in first grade and is doing simple multiplication, division, and fractions (not at school, at home with me-- he asks me to teach him this stuff "for fun"). I think he just showed a strength in math early, I wasn't surprised because DH and I were always stronger in math/science at school rather than language arts. He is average in reading, no struggles but nothing spectacular either.

My 3.5 yo DD, on the other hand, can count up to maybe 30 or so and then gets lost or loses interest Chat Icon

Oops... He's actually 2.5
A half a year does make a big difference!

I'm a big believer of kids will do what they need in their own time!

For the OP, get an early math book and go through it. Maybe show addition... But don't push it... Keep it fun. He's still so little.

It sounds like he is young to be doing what you described. I remember being tested on counting to 100 in kindergarten.

Re: Counting to 100

DS turned 4 today. Chat Icon He has been counting to 100 without any help for several months. He has been able to recognize numbers for a long time. I don't remember when he started doing that. I think that's great what your DS is able to do. It does seem to be on the early side.

Re: Counting to 100

DS (4) can count to 100, with prompting sometimes, sometimes on his own. He has trouble recognizing numbers over 20, though - he'll say six-seven instead of sixty-seven
