first foods- Oatmeal question???

When starting LO on oatmeal how often do you give it to them a day?

my Ped said give 1 tsp once a day to get them used to it, but how do you know when to increase the times daily? OR to introduce vegis and fruits?

DD will be 5 months this week and shes getting the once a day down or trying. Most ends up on her other than in her.

Started solids at 5.5 months with DD. I think I gave her several spoonfuls to start. We moved quickly to fruits and veggies too.

first foods- Oatmeal question???

According to my ped, it's really not for the nutritional value at this age. Is more to get them used to the spoon and pushing food back with their tongue. So no worries if its not making it into the mouth as much as you'd like Chat Icon

I still only do once a day (if that) with my dd at 5.5 months. We just started a couple weeks ago. I give her 1 tbsp and play around with the consistency. My ped said 2-3 weeks with the oatmeal/barley. And then onto fruits and veggies. Well be starting this this week.

Re: first foods- Oatmeal question???

Started both DCs at 5.5 months with a 2 tablespoons of rice cereal (morning and night) but most of it got spit back at me for the first few weeks. After that we went to multigrain cereal (morning and night) and veggies (at lunch), a few weeks later to fruits (with breakfast and dinner).

I started with oatmeal once a day. After 3 days I added banana and continue to add fruits and veggies every 3 days. I kept to once a day for about 3 weeks and then added a second meal. I figured around 7 months I'll try to add a 3rd meal.

I honestly don't measure anything. I just go with what looks good and have upped it as she's taking more. Most of the time she finishes or almost finishes everything and once in a while she's just not into it and a lot goes to waste.

Never measured anything. Whether it was a few TSP, or more she ate until she was full or stopped showing an interest. Increase as you see fit

I followed my pediatrician's advice. He had us start at 4 months with 1 tbsp of cereal twice per day, morning and evening. Each new cereal had to be given for 3 days before starting something new. After we did that for a couple of weeks, he said we could start adding half a jar of a fruit or veggie to each of her meals, and gave us a list of which ones he was okay with us starting with. We introduce something new every 3 days. So in the morning and in the evening, she has a tbsp of cereal and half a package of a fruit or veggie. He said that if she wanted the rest of the package, I should feel free to give it to her, but I'm limiting it for now, because she eats so little formula, and I'm afraid she won't take any if she eats more solids. I am happy that she likes her food though. A lot of it still ends up on her though!

ETA: I know a lot of people wait past 4 months to start, but my DD is so bad with the bottle that we were hoping to get more nourishment in her somehow!

Re: first foods- Oatmeal question???

Thanks everyone for your input. We did rice cereal last night and she did ok. Last bottle kept her sleeping 6 hrs ! A first in a long time.
