Differences between formula?

We are thinking of starting formula since DD isn't interested in nursing and I hate pumping. She's been supplemented with enfamil newborn but I get so many checks from similac. Is there a difference?

Differences between formula?

The differences that I know of are....

Enfamil newborn has a higher level of vitamin d
Enfamil has higher levels of DHA and AHA
The whey to casin ratio is different. I forget which one they say is more similar to breast milk.

Honestly go with what works best for your dd. mine spit up more on enfamil and does great on similac so that's why we're on that.

Re: Differences between formula?

She's been doing fine with the enfamil newborn. She spits up more with formula than when she drink BM from the bottle but not a whole lot. She's also had similac, we mixed up the sample nursettes and she did fine with similac as well. So many choices, so many decisions!!

the hospital started us out on enfamil newborn in the hospital, my ped said i could only give him RTF and i found at BJ's they sell similac in RTF cases of 32 oz bottles, which was more convenient for me, (and cheaper) so i made the switch. I think both are comparable based on how DS did on them. He's now on similac alimentum though due to his fussiness/gas issues.

Any reason why the dr said only rtf?

i am not sure why, i know every doctor is different, but my ped said they didn't recommend powder until 4 months because of how sensitive their digestive system is... but i know many people who have used powder and are fine w/ it.

All dr's are different. Mine prefers enfamil based on the reasons i listed above. ds was 7 weeks early, came home after 10 days and his dr said he could have powder whenever I wanted to.

Maybe put a call in too your dr and see what they recommend and why.

RTF is more sterile, so some Peds recommend it for the first few months.

Re: Differences between formula?

Thanks ladies. I was leaning towards staying with enfamil but I get so many more checks for similac in the mail. I think if it's not broke, don't fix it! I'll talk to my ped. Thank you again.

Differences between formula?

My ped says she prefers enfamil. It has less sugar than similac. If you don't get a lot of coupons call them up and ask for them.

Re: Differences between formula?

Enfamil is closer to breastmilk b/c of its whey and casein ratio
The newborn has more D and more whey like early breastmilk
when they are drinking 32oz then you can switch to the infant - like mature breastmilk

I personally like the gentlease the best when i was supplementing bc the proteins are broken down so easier to digest - like bm

Similac also uses sugar as its second ingredient and does not have recommended levels of DHA

Re: Differences between formula?

can i ask everyone how your DC's bowel movements are when using enfamil newborn????

my girls have been on it for about over a week (i started by mixing it w/ breast milk) but now they are fully on formula. their bm are gross - very dark green and smell awful!

ive also noticed it took one of the girls longer to have a bowel movement.. she was so uncomfortable yesterday. she final;ly pooped this morning.

im worried my one twin isnt digesting it properly.

im going to call the ped, but w the hurricane, its not like we can make any changes for today/tomm....

any experience/advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Differences between formula?

From what I've read the green color is because of the iron it's fortified with. The iron in BM is more easily digestible.

Differences between formula?

Hate to throw another one in there but DD is on Gerber Good Start Gentle as recommended by the hospital and our ped. It's
made with 100% whey proteins broken down to be easy to digest. They are called COMFORT PROTEINS, designed to help avoid spit-up, fussiness and gas due to whole protein intolerance.

They say its the closest to BM but the all prob say that.

Shes been on it for 4 months and I love it and it agrees with her.

I would go with what your DC prefers.

DS#1 got so many enfamil RTF samples from the hospital and ped. He used to only drink that and rejected powder. I guess it tastes a little different.

DS#2 was born at a different hospital and they gave us Similac samples. I EBF for a long time and just used the similac samples first. He liked it and never even tried Enfamil.

At the end, I don't think they are much different.

I used Enfamil Gentlease with DD1 and DD2 did not do well on it. I switched her to Gerber Goodstart Gentle and she made a complete 180. Look at the ingredients, I was shocked when I saw the first few ingredients in some of them. My ped said the difference is like Coke and Pepsi...
