Would you feel bad if you RSVP'd for 2 kids and they only included 1 kid?

Would you feel bad if you RSVP'd for 2 kids and they only included 1 kid?

Our neighbor invited us to their daughter's 4th bday party at Little Gym. Our 1.5yo and 3.5yo often play with their kids outside. The girls actually dropped off the invitation with no name on the envelope. I very clearly RSVP'd for both my kids. I was also pretty generous with gifts. We have only known them for a few months but I put them in the gift category of a "good" friend. I bought her 2 clearly separate gifts from each of my children.

When we got there, it was clear 1.5yo DS was not included in the headcount. 1.5yo DS is old enough that he wants to sit at the table, wants a balloon, etc. My other neighbor was also at the party and felt bad for DS#2 and pushed a chair to the table so he could sit.

I don't know if the neighbor had to pay extra at the end because of DS#2. I wasn't sure if I should offer to pay extra since I did RSVP for both kids and brought gifts from both kids. I decided to just leave it since we see them all the time. Plus they are financially secure so it isn't like they need the $.

Would you feel bad if they did not include DS#2 in the headcount?

Now I feel like I'm that mom who brought the sibling that was never invited to begin with.

From what you say about the kids playing together and no name on the invite, I totally would not feel bad! If anyone should feel bad it's the party mom for not being more clear! You brought 2 separate gifts, which is WAY more than I think most people would do. I bet the mom is feeling embarrassed for not having included your younger son in the first place!

I am just hoping she considered him a baby because he probably seems like a baby to her.

The 4yo is her youngest child. She has 2 older kids (one in elementary school and one in middle school).

If my son was 3.5 and we got an invite to a friends 4th birthday party I would automatically assume that the invite is only for the child who is closest to that age.

I think it's just a matter of interpretation though and the Mom who sent out the invitations should have definitely been more clear.

Our next door neighbor also has 3 kids and their invitation was only addressed to one of their children. The older 2 kids are much older though.

We ended up going trick or treating altogether today. Their house was the first house we went to tonight. Our kids were shouting to each other on our front steps as we were preparing to leave to go trick or treating.

I would explain that with no name on the envelope, I didn't realize ds wasn't invited. I'd apologize for the miscommunication & leave it at that.

Personally, I'd be a little annoyed. The fact that you clearly say you RSVP'd for both children and she still did not make a place for your younger child was rude (even if she felt you were rude for including your uninvited DS). She had the opportunity to mention that she only had limited space when your RSVP'd and yet she didnt and still went ahead and didnt include him. So she should be the one to feel bad, not you (especially since the envelope didnt indicate that only one child was invited).Chat Icon

I definitely think your friend screwed up by being unclear on the invitation. She may also have thought your little one was too little to sit at the table and eat with the big kids. Regardless it doesn't sound like you did anything wrong since the precedent was that your kids all play together.

I would guess she counted him as a "baby" and that is why there was no chair setup. If I were you I certainly would not feel bad, you assumed (as I think most would) that both boys were invited. I am sure it was just a mistake on her part and I am sure she said to herself "duh I should have counted him in the head count" doubt she considered you as bringing an uninvited sibling since all the kids play together.

Plus you RSVP for both kids it wasn't like you showed up and just RSVP for one and had the younger one involved. I wouldn't worry about it.

you rsvp'ed for both.... saying X & Y will be coming is very clear..... nothing wrong there, she should have corrected you then before the party if she wasn't going to plan for it.
