Clubfeet/Amnio?
Hi, Friday I had my level 2 exam. We found out that we are having a boy, which was great news, since we already have a girl. After the level 2 was done the doctor said she had to speak to my husband and I. We went into her office and she told us that the baby has clubfeet. Both of them. She said that the rest of the sono looks great and that she doesn't have a concern; however, although she believes it is an isolated incident due to her findings and my normal blood results and ultrascreen, she said an option is to have an amnio to make sure that the baby isn't having the clubfeet due to some chromosomal disorder.
We scheduled a fetal heart cardiogram because the doctor said although everything looks great with the heart this is just a precaution.
I also scheduled a meeting with a geneticist and to get an amnio on Tuesday, but after speaking to my regular doctor I decided to cancel both appointments and possibly wait until after I see my doctor on Tuesday which is for my regular scheduled 20 week appointment, and after the fetal heart cardiogram on Thursday.
I am nervous about an amnio. From everything I was told by the doctor it seems as though it's an isolated incident that can be corrected. I know the chances of miscarriage after an amnio is slight, but I'm afraid that if I got an amnio done it the baby went into preterm labor or something he wouldn't be viable- and my concern is he's probably a healthy boy and unfortunately, he will just have to have his feet corrected.
Are there any chromosomal disorders related to clubfeet? The major ones that I am aware of were ruled out with the ultrascreen, so I wouldn't know why I would be getting an amnio....
Anyone have experience with clubfeet?(If so, how long was the process, how old was your child when they were casted and for how long was that process and how long did they have to wear braces on their feet for? Also, how much money was it going in and out of doctors....
or if you have had an amnio due to getting the results of clubfeet and what were the results?
I'm really struggling with this news and I want to make sure I cover all areas before making any decisions about an amnio or what the next step is. .
Thanks for your help! Heather

Re: Clubfeet/Amnio?
I have friends who just had a baby boy in June who had an isolated case of clubbed feet with no other issues. He wore the cast from about 2 weeks old until last month, so 4 months maybe, and now he is in the braces. I don't know how long he has to have the braces for, but neither the casts nor the braces seem to bother him in the least. His feet look great already!
I have no advice on the testing, but if it were me, and all the other testing came back fine, I would skip it. Just me though.
Good luck and congrats on a beautiful baby boy!

Re: Clubfeet/Amnio?
your story sounds like my friends journey and her son was born with club feet and they said that both were badly clubbed and she found out it ran in her DH family. He was born and the club feet were not as extreme as they initally thought. A few weeks in casts and he will be fine. Everything else was ok too. Good luck to you I hope you have the best outcomes and this is just nothing.

Clubfeet/Amnio?
My doctor offered me an amnio for different reasons and I too was unsure. Then he said to me "what would you do if the results show an issue?" I told him I would still keep the baby and at that point he said there was no need for an amnio then.
You may still want to meet with the geneticist just to see the possibilities if you are really concerned, and find out what other safer testing could rule things out. I don't think correcting club feet is difficult these days if that is the only issue.

Re: Clubfeet/Amnio?
My cousin was born with club feet, everything else was perfect. He was extreme and had to have surgery with a thigh-high cast for several months after. He is now 14 and just fine - he just made team captain in his JV high school baseball team.

My father was born with club feet. He wore casts for a few weeks and has been a runner for many, many years. He's totally fine!

Re: Clubfeet/Amnio?
The ultra screen is just a screening: a probability of having those disorders based on other chemical levels. It's not 100%. So, those disorders are not ruled out.
That being said, DS has overlapping toes, which are markers for genetic disorders. Fortunately, so does his daddy & for us, it's without any other issues... But I'd want to know for certain in your case. IMO, get an amino to know what you are dealing with.
