Sounds like they've got their days and nights mixed up. During the day, keep the house bright and make noise (laundry, dishwasher, whatever). At night, keep the house dark and quiet. They'll figure it out. In the meantime, take a nap when you can.

Re: 4 week old not sleeping at night
At a class I took recently they told us, when the baby wakes at night dont turn any lights on; use a night light that is just bright enough to see what you are doing. They also said do not stimulate the baby is anyway, dont talk to him/her and dont make eye contact. Basically, meet their needs and thats it; they will eventually figure it out.

My apt is so quite. We leave the tv on and she still sleeps the animals run a muck and she still sleeps. I think I will take her for a walk and see if the noises will keep her up.

Re: 4 week old not sleeping at night
You don't.
At 4 weeks they are going to sleep how they sleep and to try and force any kind of sleeping routine now will only stress you out and exhaust them.
Go with the flow, follow your DD's lead, and as she gets older she will have a more predictable pattern of sleep and will eventually "get" sleeping at night. Right now, as tiring as it is for you, you're just going to have to deal because exhaustion and lack of sleep is just part of having a NB. It gets better though, hang in there.

Yes, ITA. At 4 weeks I dont think theres much you can do. DS was the same way..sleep during the day up and night. I didnt do anything differently except follow his cues and then from one day to the next at around 8 weeks he was STTN. Its really hard to get a routing going with a 4 week old. You can def. try what the PP said and making sure the lights, tv are on and make sure its bright and when its night time lower the lights and TV etc. so maybe she'll start associated these things with night time.

ITA. Keep it bright and noisy even when they're napping. I never did too much to try to keep her up at that age. If she was tired she slept. At night, keep it as dark and quiet as you can. Use white noise, avoid diaper changes unless DC is poopy, use white noise, don't talk to them or make eye contact. Just feed and back to bed. If DD wouldn't go down I would just walk and bounce her in the dark and when I couldn't figure out what else to do I would usually just nurse her again and she'd finally go down after that.

Re: 4 week old not sleeping at night
I found the book "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child" by Dr. Marc Weissbluth really helpful. I would highly recommend it! That book along with "The Happiest Baby on the Block" was a lifesaver.....

I agree with all the previous posters. At 4 weeks there's not too much to do. Try to keep her up during the day best you can. Obviously, she needs to sleep too. My ped told me not to let DS sleep longer then 2 hours at a stretch during the day. I also rec "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child". Best book ever!!! Hang in there! I promise it gets better!
