i also wonder what the percentage of mothers wanting circumcisn for their sons is compared to father's wanting circumcisn. I have done no research but would bet my arm and perhaps left leg that the percentage is MUCH higher for men.

I'm sure.
DH was fine either way, or that's what he said when we discussed it. But I know so many moms who didn't want it done on their sons but did it anyway bc their DHs wanted it done or bc DH had it done .

thats my point. for mothers, it is about unnecessary pain. I really think the male has a much better perspective on this. HE has a penis, I do not. He is the one who has had to live his life with our without foreskin and deal with society - not me. That study would be very interesting.

Deal with society? Is that like being pressured into something or following a belief that something is "normal"because other people are doing it? I hope that I raise my son to be a stronger minded individual than that.
I am not talking about the decision to cut- but the mindset to at least apply a line of questioning- not to do it just bc everyone on the block is circumcised. You know, everywhere else in the world the norm is not to do it, right?

well we all plan to raise our children to be stronger, tougher than that BUT lets be honest and realistic Chat Icon I bet that many more men than women would chose to circ their sons.

And I have no interest in comparing "everywhere else" to here. Like your line of reasoning above - just because everyone is or is not doing something should not overshadow my decision Chat Icon

for those who are SO against it, what are your feelings on ear piercings, breast augmentation, any sort of physical augmentation for that matter? I am seriously interested in this resposne?

Well, those are your own choice- so I don't see them as comparable issues.

As for piercing a baby's ears, I would personally wait for the child to ask, but either way it's again not comparable and I would never argue why a mom shouldn't piece baby's ears, lol.

not compareable? arent we talking about unnecessary pain inflicted on a child who cannot make the decision themselves? Chat Icon i say they are very comparable. In fact, seems the penis heals MUCH more quickly in my experience with both Chat Icon

It's not about healing time. I already said I personally would not do either but if you believe that making a pinholesized puncture that is barely visible and does not in any way change the function of the ear is the same as cutting off a portion of someone's genitalia, I'm not sure how I could ever really get my position across to you.

Breast augmentation is done on a consenting adult. I don't care what any adult decides to do with their own body(even of they chose to get circumcised) . I did pierce my daughters ears(it was before I was against circumcision) and now looking back I wish I would have waited until the girls were old enough to ask. At 5 and 6 years old they both hate wearing earrings so it was useless pain that they may never even care to have. The foreskin is attached to the head of the penis, much like a fingernail is attached to the nail bed. It first has to be forcibly separated then cut off. I don't know a single person that would not feel pain by having a finger nail ripped off. Newborns feel pain. They just can't express that pain. Some scream. Some are silenced by shock. There is NO way pulling back fused foreskin and cutting it off doesn't hurt. My DS is 18 months. His foreskin is still fused. Most stay fused until 4 or 5 ish(some until puberty). It would hurt at any age to pull it back before its ready. So why force a newborn to that pain without say? That's my personal view on it.

they feel it but cannot comprehend nor process it. they feel it and it is gone never to be remembered. think of how traumatic the birth process is even for the infant. a child who has no verbal or internal dialogue cannot comprehend or internalize what is going on. the pain that they experience for hours (in my experiece - my son was not even phased 30 minutes later) as harsh as this sounds, would not be my deciding factor.

Everyone has their own reasons for everything they do. For some, it is religious, for others, their societal views. What is right for you may not be what is right for the woman sitting next to you (same goes for me). Bottom line, to each his own. Do what is right for you but realize that may not be right for everyone.

^^ this paragraph is directed at everyone, not one person specifically.

The pain is not just 30 seconds, in my opinion. I had my first son circumcised. He hated diaper changes. Screamed and turned beat red every time that first week or two. None of my other babies reacted that way to getting changed. So I personally don't believe it's quick pain. I honestly don't care what anyone chooses to do in the end. I feel we all still legally have the right to chose to do it or not and until its outlawed its still your right as the parent to chose. But I was just sharing my personal view to the OP. whether she listens to me or not is completely up to her and I hope things go smoothly either way. In my eyes, there is no reason to put the baby through that(whether they comprehend the torture they feel or not does not change my opinion). There are other places in the world that are against it. Where its so rare to have it done(some places it's even illegal). There men don't seem to have all the horrible side effects of staying intact like all the pro circumcising propaganda here in America that they use to push people into it says. That's why on my original response I urge the OP to do some research before making such a huge decision. It's not harming ANYONE'S baby to push the idea of doing your own research. There are men out there that wish their parents researched it. They wish they had the right to choose for themselves. Some feel pain everyday from their circumsion and some go as far as trying to restore their foreskin. There is no way to say the way your son will feel towards this as an adult. There is no way to know if they will be one to feel daily pain as an adult based off a decision you made when he was days old. To me, even if the chances are low that my son may feel that way, it's not my place to take this choice away from him. Again, just my opinion.

I'll be honest, I still don't really get what you're implying. Because of sex? Before DH I had never seen an uncut penis. At year 4 of our marriage an uncut penis is what is beautiful and normal to me. We have a great sex life.

because a mother's decision may be based on emotion (and reason) where a father's decision would likely be based less so on emotion - the aspect of inflicting pain on an infant. I feel like a male would place more importance on his personal experience and feelings growing up as an individual who experienced it one way or another.

You know that saying I've seen used on here "Not my vagina, not my business"

Not my son's penis, not my business.....

I don't give a rat's ass what anyone else thinks of it. The OP obviously did, bc she was asking. It was eye opening for her to hear opinions (except for the propaganda that was spewed..not productive.)

For those of us for which that shipped has sailed, it is a moot point you are arguing. Some did it, some didn't. What's done is done.

If that's what the decision is based on, there is one huge thing lacking- research of the facts surrounding the issue.

As for life experience, my dh has none that would direct us toward circ.

Your argument makes it sound like an uncirc man would say how negative it's been and I think that would be a very atypical summation.

I would say that's an argument against circ, not for. I consider myself the temporary guardian of my child's body.

I also don't understand the general sentiment of your post. Are you saying we can't or shouldn't continue this conversation? Why? Because what's done is done? The op is deciding. That's why she posted the question. Other pregnant ladies are reading too- and ladies who will be pregnant in the future.

Eta I think maymama and the other posters talking right now are being polite and constructive.

What, it is not a stance for or against - I meant what you do with your son's penis is my business and what I do with my son's penis is mine.

I am saying for two people to go back and forth on why they did or didn't do it and argue with one another, is a moot point. As for the OP, I SAID that is why she posted the question but she already thanked everyone for their opinions and moved on. Do you just want to argue with everyone?

No, I just think it's random for you to tell us our conversation is "moot". Why do you care? Lol, whatever.

Eta I misread about not my vagina. I thought u were saying that you don't have a penis so it's not your decision.

I think most circumcised men want their sons to be circumcised and most uncircumcised men don't . Then the are men who don't care either way.

DS had his done the day after he was born. I wanted it done but didn't know they were doing it that soon. They brought him to me after and he was sound asleep. No problems after either. It healed well and looks good.

Same here. Did it in the hospital, in the nursery, they brought him back to me 10 minutes later and he was sound asleep. Healed fine, no problems at all.

The OP thanked EVERYBODY for what they had to say and also made it a point to thank Gill for her links.

I have said this before and i'll say it again while Gill's approach is not great, and trust me I can relate to that, her intentions are good. Can we please just walk away from the Gill bashing. SOme of these comments are just beyond rude and uncalled for. I get it...she is passionate and has a bad approach, but can we just all be respectful to others opinions as well.

Thank you for your courage! And also, the 'Grill bashing' can't possibly be related to what I've posted on this thread. I was respectful, non-judgmental, helpful and provided links to extremely reputable, peer-reviewed medical journal articles to help the OP in her crunch time. Maybe if you didn't refer to circumcision as "the guillotine". I totally agree with what you're saying, but you've gotta know that's inflammatory- it did make me smirk though.

Eta I also know that I'm inflammatory, lol, before someone else points that out for me.

Don't let Grill bother you so much. For as much as our parenting will hurt our children (according to her, ahem CIO, circumcision) her parenting style will hurt her children. I would hate to raise a judgmental kid who thought his way was the only way and looked down upon those who lived a different way and clearly that will be the result of Grill's parenting, though I do hope her children are resilient enough to rise above that example.

wanted to add that someone close to me had a voluntary circumcision.......at 23. He was in pain for a week and hobbled around. EVen had to explain to his bosses why he was having surgery and needed time off.

I'm sure the pain would have been less had he been an infant, but who is to say for sure?

Re: How was your DS's reaction to / recovery from circumcision?

We did not had our DS circ... When I found out I had a boy, I had asked the midwives and DR for research etc. on the procedure so we could make a choice for our family.

I think we all have the right to make the decision, but I would highly recommend educating yourself on the pros/cons of the decision to educate yourself about what is involved.

Whatever you decide, I am sure you will make the best choice for your family!

Don't do it!!! or at least do the research. No medical, hygienic, or other reason to.

Re: How was your DS's reaction to / recovery from circumcision?

I didn't have the energy to read through these posts. Oy!! I will just say this. I let my NON CIRCUMCISED DH make the decision and he decided to have it done. It was so fast and my ds did not sleep for hours like that in shock bull s h I t. Dh has had issues with his penis from not bein circumcised(I'll spare the details). He felt in the long run its more hygienic and easier for our son to take care of. Everybody gets so dramatic over things these days. Gosh!!!

for those who are SO against it, what are your feelings on ear piercings, breast augmentation, any sort of physical augmentation for that matter? I am seriously interested in this resposne?

I'm no SO against it or anything (and certainly not to the degree that I'll go spamming an innocent thread to the point that I've essentially turned people off to my POV...), but we decided not to do it. What other people do is not really my concern or business. To answer your question, breast implants or other such plastic surgeries are a decision made by an adult for their own body. As for ear piercing, I don't see that as being as "extreme" as circumcision or plastic surgery, but either way, my daughter had her ears done on her 5th birthday because she agreed to it & wanted it.

To the OP, since my son is not, I can't comment on the recovery, but if you're having second thoughts, I'd definitely say do your reasearch & decide what YOU are comfortable with. Chat Icon

My intentions were good and I feel confident saying that my expression here, on this thread has also been good. But thank you PeasandCarrots...for rising up again :).

I think the strong reaction is happening because you inundated the thread with information. There's something to be said for just politely stating your experience & opinion, providing a link or two with some helpful information & then offering up that you have some more links if anyone is interested. That's often better received than several back to back posts with links galore. That can possibly be perceived as pushy & shoving your opinion which may lead other posters to get turned off & not hear your message. It seems like you may have some good information to share & it'd be shame to see that get overlooked becasue of the approach.
