How was your DS's reaction to / recovery from circumcision?

my ob/gyn doctor did a beautiful job on teddys circ. i waited in the nicu until he was done so i could hold him right after. they say they lose pain after the circ 1-2 days after. i guess ic an say he was crankier for those 2 days but he was a newborn...and is 6 months old and stikll cranky.

i will admit...it was hard agreeing to it because i didnt want to hurt him. but my husband insisted on the circ and i support him.

Grill, in your first post, you shared your opinion. And there's nothing wrong with that-- the OP did ask for people's opinions, and you gave it. I don't agree with your stance, but I respect your right to share it.

But then you went and spammed us with like, multiple pages of radical propaganda. Look, I respect your passion for the penis, but come on now. Nobody wants to be beat over the head with your opinion. Just state your case and move on.

I disagree. I feel like you're damned if you do damned if you don't. If she would have given her opinion without all the sources it would have been like, "you have nothing to back it up". Her opinion with one source would have been like, "oh you post your one radical source". Lol, now with all that info (which can easily be scrolled past in 3 seconds) she is "spamming". I know she comes off very harsh sometimes and people dislike it, but she's entitled to give her opinion and information.

I happen to agree with the belief that it is a horrible mutilation- and my two ds are intact. It's an issue I never even thought about until I married my intact dh and got pregnant with a son. I am embarrassed to say that if my dh was circumcised I'm not sure that I would have put the research into the issue that brought me to this realization. You can all flame away but that's my personal position on the issue and I'll share it when asked.

OP, do your research. That's the best answer I can give.

Hi everyone- thanks for the responses!

I've had a very rough twin pregnancy & recovery from c-section that I feel I haven't been able to research this properly or even think straight. Let alone, learning to care of two newborns!

In the hospital, it felt like every 5 mins, someone was asking about circumcisibg. I knew I didn't want it that soon & am so glad I held off b/c DS ended up in NICU & didn't need any extra strains on his system.

I appreciate all of the responses, including Grill's.

I think I will postpone the appt until I can research & consider enough to feel confident in my decision.

DH is fine w/either option.

I think it's great that you are holding off to educate yourself. I had a mom in my due date group(when I had my second baby) that had a son that had a botched circumcision. Her story haunted me and was what made me think about researching it. Without reading her story I probably wouldn't have thought twice about circumcising my future son/s. if you decide later that its best for your son then it can still be done. But if you just went along with it now you may later change your mind and regret it. Either way it will work out and your son will be greatful just knowing you took your time to try to educate yourself and do what you felt was best. Congratulations on your twins!!

Just the threads here on LIF about botched circs will provide plenty of references. There's actually a thread on page one right now. So sad.

There are also many people on here who claim this person and that person got all these terrible infections but then in my own life I know of none- and DH is from Italy where no one circs.

So yes, it's hard to just go by what you hear. Just take your time and do the research. I know it seems overwhelming, especially a few days postpartum, but by raising the question, you are already being am awesome mom.

but it will still impact his concept of the world.

This has to be a joke right? We are speaking of a newborn child who is days old and cannot think nor process ANY concepts regarding ANYTHING. You are a nut!

In my experiece - it was done and DS was sleeping within 10 minutes. He cried during diaper changes but not from pain, from being unwrapped just as my niece did. It was completely healed within 7 days.

Funny, there are many people on here that talk about botched circs, but in my own life, I personally know none. So...I'm just saying.

DS had no problem. We did it in the hospital and it was about 10 minutes. I felt bad, but he was fine. I was probably worse off than him.

As to Grills post, I agree with Jax- your view might be really taken more seriously if you didn't come off so extreme. Like, you are singlehandedly saving us all from ourselves.

When I had DS, I read some stuff on here - different opinions about circumsizing. I was glad to see the other side as I never had even thought about it before. It gave me pause, but I came to my own conclusion and ultimately we decided to go ahead with it. I appreciated the other moms sharing their info. They did it in an informative way rather than shoving it down everyone's throat and basically trying to guilt people into thinking they were evil for their choices.

To the OP - congratulations on your twins!!! And good luck with your decision! Chat Icon

Breast augmentation is done on a consenting adult. I don't care what any adult decides to do with their own body(even of they chose to get circumcised) . I did pierce my daughters ears(it was before I was against circumcision) and now looking back I wish I would have waited until the girls were old enough to ask. At 5 and 6 years old they both hate wearing earrings so it was useless pain that they may never even care to have. The foreskin is attached to the head of the penis, much like a fingernail is attached to the nail bed. It first has to be forcibly separated then cut off. I don't know a single person that would not feel pain by having a finger nail ripped off. Newborns feel pain. They just can't express that pain. Some scream. Some are silenced by shock. There is NO way pulling back fused foreskin and cutting it off doesn't hurt. My DS is 18 months. His foreskin is still fused. Most stay fused until 4 or 5 ish(some until puberty). It would hurt at any age to pull it back before its ready. So why force a newborn to that pain without say? That's my personal view on it.

How was your DS's reaction to / recovery from circumcision?

I have 2 DS who are uncircumcised. Older is 6, younger is 1. DH is, but had no real strong feelings either way. Both kids are happy and healthy, we just make sure to clean well.
My personal reason for not circumcising was that if there is no (or at least very little) risk for a man being uncirc, there is no reason to put a baby through all that pain. I figured that if they feel strongly about it, they could get it done later in life, but you can never undo it. I should add that I know at least a few male adults who are uncirc with no ill effects.

Grill, go grow a freaking penis and get lost!

To the OP, both my boys were circumcised in the hospital by my OB at 2 days old. Both came back to me calm, asleep and never had any issues. Good Luck with your decision Chat Icon

they feel it but cannot comprehend nor process it. they feel it and it is gone never to be remembered. think of how traumatic the birth process is even for the infant. a child who has no verbal or internal dialogue cannot comprehend or internalize what is going on. the pain that they experience for hours (in my experiece - my son was not even phased 30 minutes later) as harsh as this sounds, would not be my deciding factor.

Everyone has their own reasons for everything they do. For some, it is religious, for others, their societal views. What is right for you may not be what is right for the woman sitting next to you (same goes for me). Bottom line, to each his own. Do what is right for you but realize that may not be right for everyone.

we didn't circumcise DS , I didn't want to and DH was fine with it. It's just not something that is done in my culture ( I'm Eastern Orthodox Christian, DH is Catholic) plus honestly I don't see real benefit of it. I said if he REALLY wants it done when he is older he can go ahead and do it...
Even the ear piercing , I was 23 when I got mine, my mother wanted us to decide, took me 23 yrs Chat Icon Never got DD's done either, figured she can do it when she is older.

Really though, I have nothing against it, just something I didn't want for my son.
OP - This is such a personal decision, you do what you think is the right thing to do and live with it. I'm sure it'll be just fine Chat Icon

i also wonder what the percentage of mothers wanting circumcisn for their sons is compared to father's wanting circumcisn. I have done no research but would bet my arm and perhaps left leg that the percentage is MUCH higher for men.

Hmmm, I have to say that I am against anyone deciding for someone else to do any kind of an elective procedure. If I had a DD, I would not have her ears pierced as an infant. Once she is able to choose, fine. Likewise, a consenting adult is free to do whatever he or she wants.

A new mom who is scared about her son and you Grill come on and are just plain out obnoxious!

My DS was circumsized while I was still in the hospital. They came to my room after and told me all went well and showed/told me how to take care of him during the recovery.

DH was fine either way, or that's what he said when we discussed it. But I know so many moms who didn't want it done on their sons but did it anyway bc their DHs wanted it done or bc DH had it done .

Well, those are your own choice- so I don't see them as comparable issues.

As for piercing a baby's ears, I would personally wait for the child to ask, but either way it's again not comparable and I would never argue why a mom shouldn't piece baby's ears, lol.

Re: How was your DS's reaction to / recovery from circumcision?

We decided against circumcision after doing research. We just didn't find any reason to do it except that he would look like my husband. It was well received at the hospital and I have never ever regretted that decision. DS is 11 months old and we have never had any problems at all. Our ped was very onboard with it also. If I could have found a good medical reason to do it I would have, but in my research I couldn't. Once I saw there was an actual mortality rate I was very against it. Do what is right for you and your family. My only issue with this is people making this decision with out getting educated and only doing it because so and so is or what if the kids get made fun of.

thats my point. for mothers, it is about unnecessary pain. I really think the male has a much better perspective on this. HE has a penis, I do not. He is the one who has had to live his life with our without foreskin and deal with society - not me. That study would be very interesting.

not compareable? arent we talking about unnecessary pain inflicted on a child who cannot make the decision themselves? Chat Icon i say they are very comparable. In fact, seems the penis heals MUCH more quickly in my experience with both Chat Icon

Deal with society? Is that like being pressured into something or following a belief that something is "normal"because other people are doing it? I hope that I raise my son to be a stronger minded individual than that.
I am not talking about the decision to cut- but the mindset to at least apply a line of questioning- not to do it just bc everyone on the block is circumcised. You know, everywhere else in the world the norm is not to do it, right?
