Where do the smart people live?

I know this is a weird question, but I'm still searching for a town that feels like home, and what I always come back to is that I felt most at home when I lived in Boston for college... probably because I was surrounded by smart people and loved the conversations. Where could I live in Suffolk County that's full of smarty-pantses, but not rich, snobby ones?

I get what you're asking, but yeesh, that's a bit of a loaded question. Chat Icon

But in all honesty, smart people live everywhere. It all depends on your definition of "smart".

Would "intellectuals" be less loaded? I know I'm in dangerous territory for even asking such a thing, but I don't know how else to ask it. ;) I know that, in general, poorer areas are going to have less-educated people and richer areas will have higher-educated people, but I wonder if there's somewhere in between that thoughtful people congregate. :) I'm guessing I'd find plenty of intellectuals near Stony Brook because of all the students and professors near there, for instance.

Where do the smart people live?

P.S. I'm asking here because it seems to me that there are a lot of smart people around here! And I really do mean "smart," not "intellectual," but I know smart is more subjective and harder to define.

Chat Icon I disagree.
Maybe move back to Boston. Chat Icon

eta: I grew up in a "richer" area and I knew a lot of (to put nicely) not so smart people.

I don't think that you are going to find a town full of smart people, intellectuals, or whatever else you may call them...

If you want to surround yourself with intelligent conversation, take a graduate level course at a college, join a book club, find a hobby and learn something new, visit historical sites, etc.

I also do not think that money implies intelligence at all.

I agree 1000%. I also know plenty of people who grew up without a pot to piss in, who graduated Ivy League and have awesome jobs now.

I also know college dropouts like DH for example, who could run circles business-wise around many a PhD.

Just sayin'.

Plus, this is Long Island.

It's a very diverse area full of culture.

It's not like we are some backwards town in the middle of nowhere where that's all we know (and there's nothing wrong with that either IMO).

Plus, I know plenty of people, myself included, who moved to Suffolk because it's *slightly* cheaper than Nassau County, and other areas I would prefer to live.

That alone is a SMART decision IMO. ;).

Having worked in human services since the late 90's, I totally agree with this assessment.

Many of the "poor" people I work with are highly intelligent and an extreme pleasure to deal with.

MANY middle to upper middle class and very rich families, sometimes I just go away shaking my head.

I completely agree with everything she said. Pursue your hobbies and interests within your community and surroundings, and you'll find like-minded people.

I think I understand what you're asking.

Being that you lived in Boston which is a HUGE college city (condensed into a relatively small'ish area) there are lots of academics walking around and you're surrounded by academia more than your average town. I get that "feeling" you're looking for. Totally.

Since you mentioned Stony Brook, I will respond to that. I live in Stony Brook and it's a really nice town to live in BUT it does not have that feeling you're looking for............even though the university is right here. It's like any other town on the island and despite the college being here, it doesn't have that college town, academic feel within the community. Obviously if you're hanging out on campus it will be different but when you're out and about around town, it's really nothing out of the ordinary. KWIM?

While there are many nice towns on the island to live in I don't thing you're really going to find any that fit the "feeling" you're looking for. It's just not a really college, academic kind of community around here like some towns in other states are. Good luck though!! Chat Icon

In most towns you will find your mix of the intelligent, ignorant, pompous, stupid, priviledged, poor, wonderful and criminal. As far as which towns have what percentage of each, it is impossible to know since you cant necessarily quantify "stupid" in a community questionaire. Salary and degree have little to do with it. IMO the snobbiest people frequently are overcompensating for something they lack, perhaps a guise for their lack of intelligence. Good luck.

You're probably going to be better off finding something like a book club and checking out an area's cultural opportunities. I live in a predominantly middle class/working class town (not on LI) but it has a growing artsy vibe we really like, and great area libraries.

I knew people would make a big deal out of this post. However, I completely understand what your saying. I went to school in Boston and lived in DC. I found both places to be very "intellectual" where you had high concentrations of individuals of similar educational background etc.

I don't really think that exists on Long Island and I had a very difficult time adjusting.

I do not think that OP meant that poor people cannot be smart. Using the example of poor people getting Ivy League educations, once those people start working they seldom move back o the same underprivileged neighborhood but rather one of the "nicer" neighborhoods.

In all seriousness, I was going to say the closest I think you would get to that 'feeling' is Manhattan or parts of Brooklyn.

Re: Where do the smart people live?

I get what you are asking and can completely see why it comes off poorly to others. I think you need a city, or an area near a school to find what you are looking for. I am in NJ now and there are some towns here that have that feel. The reason I think it is like that where I live now is that there are so many pharmaceutical companies congregated here. I think you would find it in Seattle, Boston, DC, NYC, the triangle area of NC, or areas near colleges and universities. But really it is what ever you make of the town you are in. There are all kinds of smarts, book, people, street, etc. I feel that a town is what you make of it.

it's true, there are more egg-heads per sf in nyc, than LI. out here...they're just more spread out ;)

i get it. i haven't found that town either. a community of like-minds. not here on LI. but joining activities where my like-minded people congregate to share similar interests has made a huge impact on what i think of my 'hood. i sought out things that challenge me intellectually, and found people to connect with there. i made my own community.

it all started with meet-ups & library programs. seek & you shall find.
