Flying with infant on Southwest

DH and I are planning to fly to FL with DS on Southwest early next year. DS will be 11 months-ish. I'm not planning to buy him a seat, just to have him sit on our laps.

My question is: Can I book the flight online with Southwest as if it's just me and DH going and then bring DS's birth certificate the day of? Or do I need to somehow notify the airline ahead of time that I'm bringing an infant with me even though he won't have his own seat? Sorry if this is a dumb question, it's my first time traveling with him. Chat Icon Thanks!

You need to indicate that you will have a lap child traveling with you. Most airlines have a spot to indicate this as you are booking. If you don't see it I'd call before you put a reservation through.

There can only be one lap child per row in case of emergency.

I recently traveled on Southwest and booked it online there was no place on line to say lap child so I called to see what to do. They said to make the reservations for myself and DH first and then call back to add DS.

I flew with my DS on southwest and agree with everyone else, call ahead just to let them know.

I just wanted to add, when you check in, ask them if the flight it full. Both directions they told us the flight was not full and saved us a seat for our DS. With that being said, we flied in the middle of week early in the morning, but you never know!
