Moms of 2 or more who had elevated risks during AFP test...

During my first pregnancy, my afp test showed 1:146 for downs syndrome. I had an amnio done. I was just listening to voicemails and I missed my dr calling asking me to call her back. I'm assuming I got a low number again (2nd pregnancy)

If you have two or more kids - did your afp test results always come back similar? Is this a genetic thing?

I'm assuming the worst already, even though I know "the worst" - the amnio - wasn't that bad last time but I just wanted to see if this is something that happens repeatedly in different pregnancies in the same woman.

I had normal AFP results with my first baby, but had a problem with my second. With him, my AFP came back at 1/20 risk for open neural tube defects though, not Downs. (Unfortunately with ONTD, since it is not genetic, there is no test that will 100% rule them out. so we had to wait until the baby was born to definitively find out he was ok. It was a nightmare). Anyway, I really think with AFP, every pregnancy can be different. Mine were.

Good luck, I hope all is well with your results.

my first baby everything came back normal with my second pregnancy we were high risk for neural tube defects (spina bifida) I did not do an amnio for either pregnancy. We were blessed with two healthy babies (although the second pregnancy was so stressful throughout thinking and not knowing for sure if our daughter would be ok ~ so happy I did not terminate the pregnancy)

Good Luck with pregnancy Chat Icon

I had normal results with my first pregnancy. With my second pregnancy, my NT results were slightly elevated for Trisomy 13/18. I met with a genetic counselor and was told that since both hormones that were tested were low, there could be a growth/placenta issue down the road. I was also told that each pregnancy is different. My risks went down with the AFP test, but my spina bifida results were slightly above normal. Again, I was told this could be more of an indication of a growth issue. I decided to not do the CVS or amnio. Everything looked good at the Level II and DS2 was born perfectly healthy. Good luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
