Elevated AFP test
A couple weeks ago I was told my AFP test was elevated, the cutoff for abnormal is a 2.5, mine was 2.2.
I had a more thorough sono at Stonybrook which came back fine, and didn't show anything. They were looking for spinal defects. My down syndrome test came back fine at 12 weeks.
Today at my 24 week appointment my dr asked if I wanted an amnio. I am all upset now, because she told me not to worry because the sono came back fine - but then said that I could still get an amnio to know for sure.
What would you do?

Re: Elevated AFP test
what was she basing her suggestion on having an amnio on....solely on the 2.2 from the AFP? Honestly if your tests came back fine at 12 weeks and your Level 2 also came back good - I personally wouldn't do the amnio.....especially since she is saying that you have nothing to worry about. I am considered older (35) and they also suggested an amnio for me even though all my tests came back great. I opted out of the amnio. You have to remember too that doctors HAVE TO suggest certain tests to cover their backsides....know what I mean? If its still really bothering you I would call the doctor again and express your concerns....I'm sure she will be able to calm you fears since she said there is nothing to worry about

Re: Elevated AFP test
I've been in your exact situation, and I had the Level II sono to rule anything that the AFP brought up before having the amnio.
Once they do the level II, they test and look for soft markers for anything AFP would have brought up. If the level II came back fine, I would not do an amnio, and I didn't.

Re: Elevated AFP test
I didn't do the AFP test bc my 12 week ultrascreen was fine and my doc said that there are so many false positives with the AFP tests he almost wishes they wouldn't do it. They should be able to put your mind at ease at your Level II like PP said...I don't think an amino is necessary unless something abnormal is found there. Good luck
