Moms of infants, flu vaccine ?

Are you questioning this years flu shot for your baby? My baby will be of the age to get one this flu season and on top of all the vaccines she has gotten already I'm on the fence to give her an additional. My other children have never gotten a vaccine and never got the flu. There are two peds in the office I go to one pushes it and one doesn't but will recommend it to children with health issues already. My concerns are still too young even though "they" say 6 months is ok and it's not certain it will do what it's supposed to anyway, and her getting really sick from just the shot alone. What are you thoughts, what are you doing? I'm sorry to start another one of these threads I'm one of those that reads every post about why to get it and why not. For those that have had winter babies and especially having other school children around what did you do?

DS is 2 and gets it every year. He is in daycare full time and for us it's a must. The flu is so dangerous for children under 5, so that's why I choose to have him vaccinated. I

DD got hers yesterday. She's just over 11 months old. I got it last season when I was pregnant. She is not typically around other school aged children. My DH is exposed to a lot at work, so for us it's a must. He's also her primary caregiver.

Yes, we all, always will and always have received the flu shots. The entire family. No reactions ever.

Re: Moms of infants, flu vaccine ?

Both my boys have gotten it when they were of age. I think around 6 months. DS 1 was just shy of 6 months at the time. They both went to daycare so it was a must. Neither got reactions. DH and myself also got the flu shot at a local cvs and no issues.
I am a SAHM mom now. My 3 yr old goes to preschool and my 14 month old is home with me. I plan on scheduling their flu shot soon as well. Even though my 14 mon old is home his brother still goes to school and can come home with germs and I also don't live in a bubble and I like to leave my house... Go to library with him, the mall, playdates, etc.

DD has gotten since she was of age. She's in daycare full-time, so it's a precaution we take. We all get flu shots as a family.

DD got it last year and this year. I was on the fence this year bc it required 3 shots at this last visit but I want her to have the extra protection so we do it.

I did not get it for DS last year and probably won't this year either. I did get it for myself and DH last year, but I'm not sure if we will this year.

My DS gets it. I think it's an important shot, an infant catching the flu is very serious. Its funny because people don't think twice about giving polio or hep b vaccines, but don't give the flu which they are much more likely to catch.

Exactly this. I have a 2.5yo and a 9 month old, same goes for both.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the vaccines for polio and hep b is the same all the time right? It's not like they have to guess at it every year I think right? I just don't like not having the certainty that a flu vaccine will actually work. At her upcoming appt. I will ask further about it. Thanks for all the replies!

We wont be giving him the flu vaccine. I wont be giving him any live virus vaccines until he's older and his neurological and immune systems are more developed.

I'm pretty sure the regular flu shot is inactivated. The nasal one is live.

Moms of infants, flu vaccine ?

My twins will be 2 in December and get the flu shot. They just had theirs 2 weeks ago. I personally don't get it for myself, but I give my kids everything the Ped recommends. That being said, there are over 200 different strains of the flu and there is no way of knowing which strain is going to be going around when they make the shot. DS got the shot last year and still got the flu. He didn't get it too badly, and I believe that is because he has the vaccine.

Re: Moms of infants, flu vaccine ?

I always refuse it. Have since she was born and I dont take it either.

She's been in daycare since 4m. Sure some ped suggest it but no one has pushed that on me.

Flu shots are always a best guess effort. Yes, her daycare had older children there for after care. They were not SUPPOSED to be in her room, but I had seen them in there. I believe the flu is dangers to small children. I also believe preventional care of washing hands and avoiding contact is key plus to me having the virus around her actually makes me feel like she built up antibodies for it.

My doctor once suggested that because *I* havent had the flu shot since I was young (i got the flu after getting it and was hospitalized) that I built up antibodies, I passed those on to her. She and I both got H1N1 last year but it wasn't the end of the world, just annoying.

I hope that by not exposing her to the best guess flu shot she builds up antibodies and can better defend herself. But I have no scientific proof.

I never gave her the shot and have no intentions of doing it any time soon. It never crossed my mind to be worried because for me I worried more about her getting sick FROM the shot (altho they swear that's not possible).

Re: Moms of infants, flu vaccine ?

Our state requires all daycare kids over 6 months to get the flu shot. Even if they didn't, I'd still give it to my kids. For me, the benefits outweigh the risks.

DD is 4 months now. I am sure they will suggest Flu shot at her next vac. appt. but we will refuse it. She is at home with me and not around other children at this time. Maybe next year.

I vaccinate my kids for the flu because they are in school and around other kids at a babysitter. I have seen too many kids and adults get very sick from the flu.

I am 99% sure infants don't get the live virus one. DD's was not live virus.

Re: Moms of infants, flu vaccine ?

I just went to Ped today for my DS 6 month well and didn't get it. I have never had a flu shot and either has DS. I gave my older DS it once, because I kind of got guilted into it. I believe the first time he got it was at around 7 months.
I'm so on the fence about get DS it. I'm worried his older brother will bring something home from school. My DS was hospitlized a month ago for something else, and I never want to go through that again. It was the scariest experience ever. So I worry because I know the flu can be very serious to young infants. I have to think about it.
He got three vaccinations today, so there was no way I was giving him another. I'm already upset with how many they give them at once.
