When/If you gave your DC a blanket to sleep with?

My twins will be one on Friday and I feel during the night they get chilly. I think they are too big for a sleep sack. At what age do you think it's safe to give a blanket to sleep with?

All 3 of my kids have had a blanket on/with them since day 1. Nothing super heavy or thick, usually fleece.

DS is 16 months old and has had a blanket from day 1. This time of year, it's a comfy fleece blanket. He actually has two in his bed....he scrunches one up as a pillow and uses the other one as a blanket.

I didn't feel comfortable giving it until DD was a little over 2. Someone had posted once about a baby around 18 months died of SIDS and although I'm sure that's extremely rare, I'm too nervous about stuff like that. Plus, at 12 months I felt like she was rolling around the crib too much to keep the blanket on. By 2 she slept more calmly.

Eta: I just always put a onesie under her pjs and tight socks that she couldn't pull off

DD has been with a blanket since she was about 1year old (she's now 17 months). For the summer, she had the aidn and anais think blankets and now she gets a fleece or heavier cotton one.

My older son was in a sleep sack until just before 2 (they make them in that size, what makes you think they are too big?). At that age, we switched him to a blanket.

At around 15 months we gave a home-made knit blanket that had large holes in it (his old bedroom was very cold). During the summer we gave him a Aden and Anais blanket. Now that he's over two, he will have a real blanket this winter. Hopefully now that we are in our own house, we will have better control over the temperature in his room.

Around age 1 DD had a blanket and a pillow as well as her baby blanket and a stuffed animal. By age 1 the sleep sack was too restrictive for her, she didn't like it at all. The greatest risk for SIDS is around 3-9 months so by age 1 I was totally okay with her having things in her crib. Chat Icon

ETA - DD was (and still is) a very calm sleeper, she doesn't move around at all during the night. Wherever you lay her down is where you found her in the morning so a blanket has always worked great for her, it stays on all night.

DS is 16 months and still in a sleepsack. He loves it. He also rolls around too much for a regular blanket to be worth it.

They are definitely NOT to bottle a sleep sack!! They make them with feet holes for big kids!! I have one for DS and love using it still (he will be 2 in a few weeks) because blankets never stay on him. He kicks them off and moves around too much for there to be any chance of them staying on. At least when I use the sleep sack i know he is going to be warm throughout the night.

my ds moves all over the crib and a banket would be worthless... he sleeps in an oversized sleep sack and loves it

I gave DD a crocheted blanket around 1 year old. It very rarely stays on her throughout the night.

Since one she has been sleeping with a crocheted blanket, felt more comfortable sleeping with that since it has wholes. She loves it.

DS just turned 2 and we gave him a blanket last weekend....he hates it! He moves around allot and he kept getting caught up in it and waking himself up so we got rid of it.

We just put him in a 1 piece PJ and in the winter, we use a fleece one and he has always been fine.

When/If you gave your DC a blanket to sleep with?

DD is 18m and uses XL sleep sack at night because a blanket would never stay on & I know she'll be warm. For naps she uses a blanket.

Re: When/If you gave your DC a blanket to sleep with?

At 12 months, my DS is still in a sleep sack but he is growing out of it fast and its a Large. I started giving him his lovey blanky (baby size) around 10-11 months. Nothing went in the crib before that.

Re: When/If you gave your DC a blanket to sleep with?

I'd say around 17 months old she got a blanket in the crib.
The thing is, even now at 2, she rarely stays under it. Instead she likes to use it as a pillow almost, lay on it, or cuddle with it.
I will go in before I go to bed to chekc on her and I will cover her.
But by morning, it's off again and she is cuddling with it or laying on it.

So it's not great for warmth really
It's more her comfort item
She can't sleep without it.
