bad reaction to pb :( edited
My husband and I adore pb, im diabetic and its a staple in my diet... I gave it to Logan today to try for first time and he got red, itchy, and got hives :(
After two low doses of benadryl he was fine, but it was a bit scary
does this prob mean he will always be allergic?
**thanks all, we of course called the ped immediately, they told us to give him benydryl... he was still hivey today so we brought him in and they gave us a script for full allergy testing... he has an ear infection which they said could be the cause of the hives, or the pb, wont know til we get results

Re: bad reaction to pb :(
I don't know much about these reactions, but I am so scared DD will have food allergies every time I give her something that I know DH and I love!
I'm sorry! Maybe ask your Pediatrian? How old is DS? Was the reaction immediate?

Re: bad reaction to pb :(
I would advise you to call your ped. This happened to my DS and every time he was exposed to peanuts, his allergic reaction got worse until he began to have breathing issues. Hopefully your DS isn't terribly allergic but he could be and it's definitely something to follow up on.

Re: bad reaction to pb :(
I would let the ped know. If it is a allergic reaction they do get worse with each exposure. Some kids out grow the allergy as they get older. When I ask my ped about trying peanut butter he told me to only start with all natural peanut butter. he said there are so many cases that he has seen that the kids are allergic to what is put in the peanut butter. I would not try again without talking to them.

Re: bad reaction to pb :(
Unfortunately, I think there is a good chance that he does have a peanut allergy of some sort. Obviously, I'm not an allergist, but this is the exact same reaction (although not as severe) that my son had the first time he had pb and he does, in fact, have a peanut allergy. I would take him to an allergist asap and explain what reaction he had and have them do a skin test. GL!

Re: bad reaction to pb :(
Many people don't react the 1st time to something which is why the recommend the 3day rule for new foods. If he had a reaction to it the 1st time I would be concerned that it could be a more serious allergy. Reactions tend to get worse not better. I would go an allergist asap and get tested to make sure it was the peanuts and not something in it or something else.

bad reaction to pb :(
With a reaction like that to something that could potentially have a deadly allergy, I probably wouldn't give PB again. I agree with pp to see an allergist.

Same happened to my nephew. He just went to an allergist, my sis is waiting for the results. Try sunflower butter, delicious!

Take him to the allergist to get tested and get a prescription for an epi-pen. You don't want to mess with a peanut allergy. My DS is allergic to peanuts, we have no peanut anything in the house. Sunflower seed butter is a great alternative. There is also something called Wow Butter, which is made from soy and supposed to taste exactly like peanut butter, but I haven't tried it.
