For #1, next week he is turning 5 and that is his last big party. For #2, we're doing a small Christening, big First, Third and Fifth BDay...just like his big bro. Thats it.

After 1.

Christening
1st birthday, and that was it.

Since preschool, it has been immediate family parties at home with pizza and cake (grandparents and his aunts/uncles/cousins) and then a small class party.

Us too! Every year after one has just been a party at home with some friends and family. Nothing crazy! Eventually I will have friends party for them but not till they ate in kindergarten.

We did a fairly big Christening and first birthday with 75 people at each. We don't plan on doing another big party for him until his First Communion. For his 2nd birthday, I am thinking a backyard party with grandparents, my siblings & DH's siblings, and possibly my BFF and his BFF (they are both child free so they don't bring extra guests haha), and that's it. I kind of feel bad asking extended family we only see on holidays to come to a big bash at my house every year and feel obligated to give my son a gift.

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

We (mostly I) have a big immediate family. We celebrated my DD bday with just immediate family and that was 21 ppl.
We are having a joint party this weekend at our house that will be a couple of friends from school, family friends and family and that will be 60 ppl.
I anticipate that we will always have bday parties for our kids. In the future probably class friends at a kids type party.

We did big parties for Christenings.
Same will be for Communion and Confirmation.

DS turned 5 in January. For his 6th Bday, I think we are just doing cousins over for pizza or something like that.

DD will be 4 in May and I'm thinking of doing just cousins at White Post Farms.

For me, I think once they hit Kindergarten, the "big" parties can be narrowed down.

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

We had big birthday parties for first birthdays. We also had a bris and a baby naming. For parties after that we invite family and DS and DD choose a certain amount of kids from there class (DS is in elementary and DD is in daycare). We just can't invite the whole class...its way too much.

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

I am always just going to have a low key BBQ for the first - third birthday's. After that just immediate family. I will never hire entertainment or spend $1k on a BBQ as I would rather give my dc a monetary gift for their savings accounts. I think really pricey house parties are a waste.

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

we had a "big: party for her christening and it was even really big just help in my parents back yard.

DD birthday is in on New Years dar for her first i got a pretty cake and invited some people over and held it at my parents.

This year i got deal off living social so i am having it at a place the deal covers up to 12 children i doubt i will have that many im only inviting family and close friends. Im only doing this cause its costing me $200 i figure i would probably spend that much just dong something small at my house (last year i think i spent that much ) and this way i dont have to clean up.

I dont know whats conisdered big but i dont know once she has firends in school i will always invite them to her parties. But idont really plan on spending $$$$$ On it

We had more than usual for the baptism(which was still in our house so not that big- maybe like 25ish

Then birthdays were just family, and a few close friend families.....also inside the house, smaller than the baptism maybe closer to 15-20ish

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

DH and I don't have a lot of immediate family, so birthdays 1 and 2 were very small. For 3 & 4, we did her class from nursery school and a few friends of the family.

DD is an October baby, so her birthday was literally as soon as school started last year. We invited some from school (K) and some from nursery.

This year we are doing the whole class.

Next year when she has some more established friendships we will go to a smaller party.

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

DS had big 1st and 2nd Birthday parties, and a big christening. I am done with the big parties until he is 5.

For DD I am going to have a very small christening and a big 1st Birthday party. She won't get another big party till she is 5 also.

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

We did big 1st bday parties for the boys- over 100 people at a catering hall. But since then we just do dinner at our house for the immediate family. And then we have kids bday parties- bowling, gym place, Chuck E Cheese, etc...

We did a combo 1st birthday/christening party for DS's 1st Birthday.
2nd birthday we did chuck E cheese
3rd birthday we did a bouncy house party place,(I forget the name)

This year for his 4th we are not doing a party - we will do cake and pizza with family. Then I want to take him to the Christmas event at Sesame Place and also to see the Christmas tree in NYC (DS's bday is 12/11)

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

We don't do big parties by other people's standards. Since DD was 3 we've had biggish parties of 12-18 kids, around 30 people total. We have them at out house, one year we rented a giant water slide, this year we had snow white come. They cost more than I ever thought I would shell out for a kiddie party ($500 and up).

But, we only do it when they are old enough to remember and only when they start asking. Neither of my other 2 have had a bigger party yet, just cake and pizza at home with the family (well, my 10 month old has not had even that yet).

I think now that DD is in school, we may do smaller parties and take her and her friends somewhere. But, it's really up to her.

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

I did:
christening
1st Birthday and that is it!

after that: Both Grandparents, DH's Sisters, my brother and our 2 nephews for pizza and cake every year after that!

I feel guilty doing the 2 big parties above as is...esp so close together ... so I am guessing the next big party will be 1st Holy communion! Not sure what age we will have a kiddie b'day party for them...but my DD just turned 5 and we didnt do it yet!

I personally think it is too much having one every year...
