thanks.

Has anyone done a long distance trip with just one adult and a toddler. LI to Disney World. I have done the trip a dozen times with hubby and DS has done the trip 2 times already. I would take 2 overnights and 3 days to get down there... Am I crazy? Right now it is the only way for us to go as I can't fly because I get severe motion sickness and hubby can't be in the car for that long...

And it would be the last "family" trip for a few years...

Driving to Disney by myself with a 3 y/o?

is it possible for DH to take 3 y/o on plane and you drive in 1 day? i know my 3 year old would be miserable after 2 hours. we drive to NJ and she complains. but i guess you know your child best.

just keep DS entertained with as much things as you can, lots of DVDs, coloring, lots of potty breaks.

i would drive as far as you can, get a hotel sleep and then drive again, or try to drive at night.

Re: Driving to Disney by myself with a 3 y/o?

That is a looooong drive to do by yourself. Will someone be meeting you down there?

I personally don't think it is worth the long drive. We just booked our second disney trip this year. We like disney because it is such a short flight. I think it says 2 hours but I think we were only in the air for a little over an hour.

Could you suffer motion sickness for 1-2 hours?

eta: we live in DC. From NYC, it would probably be 2 full hours in the air.

Re: Driving to Disney by myself with a 3 y/o?

Have you considered a train or bus trip instead? I know you mentioned the motion sickness but these might be more similar to a car ride I'm thinking (although you definitely know yourself best!). At least that way you could do a straight shoot and just sleep on the way.

I also would probably try to send your LO with DH on the plane and make the drive as short as possible. I can't imagine being in a car for that long with a 3 year old and I think it would feel like an eternity to them. If this were for a permanent move it would be one thing but I feel it would be too much just for a vacation.

This is probably a really dumb suggestion, but have you tried dramamine, ginger, motion sickness bracelets, etc? My mom gets motion sickness but she's been able to curb it with the above. Good luck whatever you choose and have a great time! Chat Icon

Re: Driving to Disney by myself with a 3 y/o?

Oh God I would never.
My DD requires too much attention on long car rides so we need one person driving and one person tending to her.

I agree with the person who suggested your DH flying with your LO and you driving alone.
Or are there any meds- maybe prescription- that would help you on the flight? I know they have some pretty good motion sick meds now- by prescription.

I was thinking of what Sparrow said..a Train seems like it would be a good way to go. You could still give your child lots of attention and you dont have to be so worried about staying focused on the road so much..

I wouldn't, and this is coming from someone who travels solo with 2 kids everywhere. I would be worried about if *I could handle it, potential car trouble 17 hours from home, etc. not so much as whether or not the child could handle it. My car limit is 5 hours. Our last trip to Hershey took 7 hours with horrible traffic, so there is no way I could do FL driving.

I would get some motion sickness pills and hop on a plane to be there in 3 hours.

You are a saint for even wanting to do that. I personally wouldn't be able to do it, a couple hours is the absolute max either of us can stand the car.

Re: Driving to Disney by myself with a 3 y/o?

Too expensive for the train and I would get sick on the bus... DS is great on long car rides.. I would drive about 8-10 hours the first day to get most of the driving out of the way. Would stop every 2-3 hours and he will sleep. Between the ipad, dvd player, and toys he will be occupied. I have driven to the white mountains in NH (5-6 hours by myself with him) and to West Virgina with him by myself. My family would meet me down there. And I would have a whole day to recoup from it. I have time to think about it. It will be our last family trip down there...

I would never--but only because I'm a big chicken. I do not like driving around unfamiliar places and I would be nervous to stay alone out of state. However, I've driven straight to NC on a few occasions with children as young as 12 mos and as old as 5 and in the end, they were fine--even without a DVD player...

Question...if DH and you have done it "a dozen times," why can't he drive now? (sorry if I missed an explanation...)

Honestly, the drive wouldn't bother me either DD is great in the car, but I would not want to be staying at roadside hotels alone with DD. Could you bring someone with you? Your mom, sister, best friend?

I actually contemplated driving to TX (to visit my in-laws) alone with DD over several days. I can't fly when I'm pregnant. But its the hotels that made me question it.

Re: Driving to Disney by myself with a 3 y/o?

What if you knocked yourself out on the flight w/ a xanex so you slep the whole way?

Obviously that would leave your DH to handle your 3 year old ......but 3 or 4 hours is different from 3 DAYS of driving !!

honestly... that sounds horrible! LOL and really not worth all the time you'll spend driving!
you know youself best... but its a SUPER short flight down there!! It makes SOO much more sense to find a way to deal with the motion sickeness for a short time, then spend 3 DAYS in the car! i would hate to spend so much of my vacation time in a car like that!

My Mom and brother are flying down. Booked their tickets already... Hubby has circulation issues and can't be in a car for long periods. Not to mention his driving scares the crap out of me! The hotels don't bother me as I usually stay at the same place every trip.. I can usually make it to the destination I am planning.

I am trying to get someone to come with me. But I would have to compensate them somehow and I don't have the extra money. Mom and brother are flying down. Booked their tickets already. Everyone else is working or not able to go.

My hubby isn't capable of handling DS at all on his own. I can't drug myself or I will be out of commission for days. I tried that after I drove to Chicago four years ago. I slept for almost 2 days!!!! Then it left me groggy for a couple of more days...

I would never do that. I would be too afraid of something happening and being alone with DC< kwim?

What about taking a train?

It costs way too much for the train.. I am not afraid of driving. I actually prefer it. I just want to know if anyone else has done it before.. I have AAA. I have been all over with DS by myself before. From NH to West Virgina. I know it sounds crazy to some, but I like to bring him to different places. I have family up and down the east coast. Just about in every state if something would happen, I know they would come to me..

It sounds like you're pretty comfortable with it, so I say go for it. I used to regularly drive an 8-10 hr trip, although I never did it alone. If you like driving, think DS will handle it ok and you have a good game plan, then I think it will be ok. It doesn't sound like you have many other options. Good luck!

I would only be driving a max of 10 hours the first day. So that leaves me with less time on the road the next 2 days. I will still have 7 nights in Disney. And can do whatever we want coming home... I am going to weigh the pros and cons and really think about it. Thanks for all the information...

Yeah, sounds like YOU'RE ok with it then do it. Lots of stuff between NY & Disney. Should be a good ride. I love to drive and long distances don't bother me at all. That said, I never drive that long with AJ alone. Just never have. Not sure I never would, just haven't had it come up.

But seems you're a pro. Go for it!
