help - my son screams at night and won't go back to sleep!

a little back story...please don't judge...DS is now almost 11 months and has been sleeping in the bed with me for the last month. We have tried several times to let him CIO, but it just hasn't worked for us. I haven't totally minded having him in bed with me, but I know he shouldn't be. I just keep telling myself he will outgrow it!

Anywho...he was sleeping through the night for the past month, getting up occasionally (which he was in the crib also), especially since I'm still nursing and he knows the boob is right there. It's been getting worse the past week and the last 2 nights he is waking almost every 2 hours and screaming and wailing, most of the time with his eyes closed! A few times I have been able to rock him or lay him back down and he'll fall back asleep, but nothing worked last night. He wakes himself up, sits up and makes this horrible screaching noise. He has no fever, we've given him advil and the only thing that finally calms him is nursing and that doesn't always work. Because as soon as I move he starts all over again.

I'm thinking it's his teeth, but he has a few already and it never made him act like this before. Any advice would be wonderful. I need sleep and I don't want to see my baby like this. Thanks so much for reading!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

There are so many things that could happen.

Maybe he's hungry? Maybe he's sick. maybe he's having nightmares. Maybe it's a phase.

My two have been sick. Both have been waking up SCREAMING because their nose is stuffy & they can't breathe.

I've had no sleep in 2 days (actually about 2 hours of sleep per night)... but it'll get better.

As for the crib thing... you can do it without cry it out by having a mattress on the floor next to his crib & slowly moving it out of the room (every night a bit further).

Thanks! Someone else mentioned he might be hungry. He isnt reaching for my boobs when this happens, like he usually does when hes hungry, but it is the only thing that soothes him. We had recently cut back a little on his solids because he had been vomiting, but we might have to up it a little. I just hope we can ALL get through whatever this is!

My mom mentioned sleeping on the floor. Guess we might have to try it. Thanks again and hope your kids feel better!

My DS would wake up SCREAMING....like soemone was killing him when he was teething. I didn't know it at the time so I would try everything and he ended up just transitioning through it and then BAM teeth.

It could be anything. Is he learnign anythign new. My DS is startign to walk and in the beginning it would happen with that too.

My DS sometimes wakes screaming w/ his eyes closed and is inconsolable. I thought it might be night terrors. The ped saw him around that time and said his teeth were ready to come down (guess they were swollen or something). She was convinced that is the problem. Another time it happened he had diahrea in the AM so I'm assuming it was stomach pains.

I'm thinking teeth too and hoping it passes!

He is finally cruising and moving all over. So i guess that can have something to do with it as well . Thanks everyone!

My twins are 11.5 months old and they woke up and still sometimes wake up, due to teething. My DD screams so loud I swear my neighbors can hear her. I also had them sleep in our bed thinking it will calm them. It worked for a little bit, but they would still wake up screaming. It passed with my DS, but occasionally still happens with DD.

Sounds like my DS when he was teething. Did it when his top teeth came in and then again for his 2 yr molars. My DS 2 is opposite and thy never bothered him. Each kid is different. Hopefully it passes. Chat Icon

It is his top teeth that are coming down now. I try to check for more, but he doesn't let me look in his mouth!

He was a little better last night. Still woke up, but not so much screaming anymore. This time he decided to "talk" to me from 4-4:30am! LOL

I always freak that DS will never sleep again and then we figure out after the fact what it was.

Glad its the teeth...it will be temporary then!!!!
