Toddlers and saying sorry?
We are trying to work with DS to either say "sorry" or give a hug when he does something wrong, but he doesn't do either most of the time. I got a report from daycare today that said he hit another child and refused to say "sorry" to the other child.
I am at a loss on how to handle, we've talked to him about hitting hurts and to use words, but of course, as a toddler, he does hit from time to time. We've never had a problem with the hitting, we normally give a time out immediately after he hits. but I am just not sure how to help him understand this, or if he's too young? He doesn't even say sorry to myself or DH when he does something here.
Any advice would be appreciated.. I don't want to push it if he's young, but I do want him to understand he has to show he's sorry when he does something wrong.
TIA!

Re: Toddlers and saying sorry?
IDK not sure how old your ds is but not sure he would remember why he is saying sorry if you made him do it the next time he is at daycare.
When he is with you try to enforce the "sorry". Don't let him move on until he does it. Sometimes I physically have to bring them over and put their arms around the other kid or I have him/her sign sorry (they don't say it yet). Sometimes I have to do hand over hand to get them to do it. But I do not let them continue to play until they do it.
good luck

Re: Toddlers and saying sorry?
I don't know how old your DS is, but I started pretty young with trying to get my toddler to say she's sorry. When she says something fresh (usually saying "NO" -- she's not really hitting yet), I tell that she can't talk to mommy like that and she has to say she's sorry. She does. She definitely understands what it means because now if she bumps in to me or knocks something down, she'll say "sorry, mommy." She's now 20 months. Though if I asked her to say it to another child, I don't know if she would.

Toddlers and saying sorry?
as a toddler we had him saying sorry... he cant move til he says it, if he still resists then he gets a time out.

this is what we do. If you cannot say sorry, then you'll remain in time out.

Re: Toddlers and saying sorry?
Part of timeout is saying sorry when it done. DS is not allowed out of timeout unless he says it.
Ex. DS kicked DH in the stomach last night. I told him that we dont kick. It hurts and to please say sorry to daddy. He refused. He went into timeout. Every two minutes (he is 2) I would come over and ask him if he was ready to say sorry to daddy. He said no for 30 minutes. Then life went on
He is about to be 3 and is testing us but I do not give in.

Not sure how old your DC is but I would say stick to your discipline routine. Consistency is the key until they "get it"
