Nursing moms, desperate for some insight!

DD is 4.5 months and ebf. The past few days I've been feeling like my supply is decreasing which has me stressed out. DD's nursing sessions have gotten shorter and I don't think she's getting as much. I don't think it's just her being more efficient or anything. Suddenly today, I can't get her to nurse at all. She nursed this morning and I felt like she did fine. Then we tried again and she kept pulling off. She was also biting some. After trying for a while I gave up and she was fine. I tried again after a while and nothing. I finally gave her a bottle of pumped milk and she took it. I don't know if it's teething, or she's frustrated by not getting enough, or what. I only have about two more feedings worth of milk pumped so that's got me freaked out too. I've pumped three times today and have only gotten 3-4 ounces.Chat Icon

I don't know what to do and I know that stressing out will not make things any easier. Any advice or anyone go through something similar?

Is she having gas issues? DD won't nurse if she has has/has to burp. My only other suggestion is are you still using slow flow (level 1) nipples in her bottles? If not then the bottle might be easier for her than your boobs? Good luck!

She is a little gassy today and last night. Usually she's squirmy and harder to feed when gassy but not impossible.

I am still using level 1 nipples and she very rarely gets a bottle so I don't think it's preference...unless she's teething and nursing is painful but she doesn't complain if I press on her gums.

DD is the same, if she's gassy, she keeps pulling off. maybe take some fenugreek pills to help increase your supply to see if that makes a difference for her. she might be going through a growth spurt and needing more during her feedings and getting frustrated- your supply will adjust to her needs if that's the case.

Totally agreed.

How much water are you drinking? If I tried to cut down how much I drank, I felt like my supply took a hit. Try steel-cut oatmeal (the kind you cook); that always helped me.

eta: also try some skin-to-skin. Spend as much time as possible snuggling with the baby in their diaper and you topless or in a nursing bra.

Could be what they call a nursing strike. DD did this with me during one of her "wonder weeks". Would take a bottle just fine but refused me.... screamed her head off. I was heart broken, I couldn't figure out what was going on. Someone told me about nursing strikes and I read about it online. That is definitely what it was, it lasted 2 or 3 days but then she was fine. During that time I just worked with her... skin to skin and I kept trying like every hour but never really forced her. I read trying to force can make things worse. Luckily she nursed really well during her night feedings. It is really frustrating but I'm sure you both will get through it fine. Another note... I read that other things like an ear ache or teething can cause a nursing strike too- not just the wonder weeks.

Thanks ladies. Thank goodness she's been better this afternoon and evening so my meltdown is starting to pass. I had DH go out earlier to get me Fenugreek and Mother's Milk Tea. I'm still not sure what was up with DD but she seems to be over it for the most part. Maybe she was just way overtired and didn't want to deal with my slow flow. She was up for three hours last night, not really fussy just awake, which is very unlike her.

I really thought the stressful part of bfing was behind us, but the doubt never seems to fully go away. As stressful as it is, I do love it!

Could you be getting your period? Apparently when you get your period the taste of the milk changes. It might be a reason for her pulling away.

Not as far as I can tell. I did try reusable nursing pads starting last night so maybe something smelled wrong to her. I'm guessing it was a combo of factors.

I had two bowls of steel cut oats this morning, took 1 fenugreek pill, and had two cups of mother's milk tea and a ton of water. Hopefully if I keep this up within a few days I'll be springing a leak.

My supply always tanks around the time I get my period. Maybe that's it? It always returns to normal after, I give DS pumped bottles during as needed. GL!

Re: Nursing moms, desperate for some insight!

In regards to your supply, I was going to say maybe you're getting AF soon. Oatmeal and Fenugreek is a good start to help increase your supply but I would take 3 pills, 3 times per day.

Another thing to keep in mind is that around 4 months, babies become much more aware of their surroundings and get distracted easily. I remember getting so frustrated because DS would unlatch anytime he heard a noise, saw something move, etc. In the meantime, I'd end up leaking milk all over him, me, and the glider! I found that middle of the night feedings when he was sleepy went so much more smoothly.

Good luck!
