Switching to toddler bed - door open or closed?
I'm curious what you did when you switched DC over to a toddler bed. Last night was DD's first night and we closed her door so she couldn't come running out, but it was kind of traumatic for all of us. If you did leave the door open, how did you keep them in their room? TIA.

We have door closed and a gate on the top of the stairs in case DS opens the door to his room.

This is what we plan to do. I also usually keep all the other doors upstairs closed as well.

Re: Switching to toddler bed - door open or closed?
Door was closed when she was in a crib, door stayed closed when she was in her bed. Didn’t make sense to change it up. Plus her room is closer to the living room, we still have the TV on at night.
Then again we slept WITH her a long, long time. Even now she still asks us to sit with her until she’s asleep.

Re: Switching to toddler bed - door open or closed?
Door closed with a gate at the end of the hallway, so he can only access the bedrooms and bathroom.
He can open his own door. We leave ours open for him now that he's in his own bed.
He wakes up almost nightly, jiggles his door handle which wakes me up, then comes barging into my bedroom.
If I'm fast enough, I get to his door before he does, and I can steer him back into his room.

Re: Switching to toddler bed - door open or closed?
My DD has always slept with her door closed. Honestly, when she switched over to her toddler bed she NEVER had the inclination to get out.......she just fell right asleep so I guess it wouldn't have mattered either way, we just always kept her door closed for "keeping it quiet" purposes.

We keep her door closed now, so when we switch her out of the crib her door will stay closed.

We always kept DD's door closed, so it didn't even occur to me to have it open when we switched her over to a toddler bed.

We keep the door closed and there is a gate at their bedrooms. When they wake up in the morning they open their doors and stand at the gate and call for me.

We keep his door closed. But we havea gate at the end of the hallway, so he doesnt have access to the stairs. We now sleep with our bedroom door cracked open.

Re: Switching to toddler bed - door open or closed?
No flames please - door closed and locked! We turned the lock around because we were afraid of her getting up and roaming the house at night. A gate would not have worked. She always had the door closed when it was a crib.

Switching to toddler bed - door open or closed?
We always keep their doors closes, and always have from the time they were born and in a crib. When we switched our older son to a bed, we obviously just kept the door closed. Right now, we have a childproof doorknob cover on his side of the door, even though he can't reach the knob yet. When he gets closer to reaching it, we will add a gate at the top of the stairs jist in case. We don't want to take any chances.

open - we have always kept her door open and she freaks out if she wakes up and its closed. We have a gate for the stairs. But she doesnt even get out of bed without calling for us still.

Switching to toddler bed - door open or closed?
We plan to have the door open with a gate at the top of the stairs. Growing up and even now my bedroom door is always open at night. I cannot sleep with it closed. Since we are all currently living on the first floor of the house I will close DD's door halfway to try to block out lights and sounds from the rest of the house. Once we all move upstairs both of our doors will remain open and we will have a gate at the top of the stairs.

Re: Switching to toddler bed - door open or closed?
My granddaughters door is closed in the summer. But in the winter it can't be closed because her room is like an oven, so they just put a gate across her doorway with the door open for air circulation. They have central air so in the summer her room is nice and cool. When we put her in for a nap or to sleep at night she will get out of her bed and close the door!

Doors are closed for fire safety reasons! We also have a gate in the hallway this way if she gets out she can't go far!

Re: Switching to toddler bed - door open or closed?
Was taught from day 1 that doors should always be closed for fire safety. DS is in a toddler bed, but can't quite get the door open yet. DD will open the door and they will both come into our room to wake us up - neither will roam.

Same. It took DS 3 months to figure out how to open the door so now he let's himself out and heads into our room.

Switching to toddler bed - door open or closed?
Door is left open a crack but there is a gate on the outside of her door. When she wakes up in the morning she opens her door and stands at the gate to call for us. She will be 21m this week and just started trying to climb over her gate. She is just about there. We also have a gate at the top of the stairs which she would pass from her room to ours if she ever does get over her gate
