Re: When did your LO complete these milestones

rolling over to belly, around 4.5 mos
sitting unsupported i want to say around 6 mos.

I don't think eating baby food (6mos) and crawling (6.5 mos army crawl) are milestones.

Many people don't know that crawling isn't a milestone anymore... I wasn't sure if you knew, and I've seen quite a few people on here worrying about certain milestones/non-milestones when it's not necessarily something to be concerned about at that point. Just trying to help!!

I'm really curious...why isn't crawling a milestone anymore? In grad school I learned about it being important to achieve before walking, and all the PTs I work with agree. We always ask about it when doing developmental histories. When/why did it change?

I have NO idea, honestly. It's not something I ever was concerned about so I didn't look into it.... I have seen it mentioned 100s of times on here when mom's are concerned about crawling. I guess I just took people's word for it Chat Icon

ETA: i did a search on here for "crawling and milestone" and did confirm that i've seen it mentioned many times... maybe one of those posters could chime in, lol.

DD rolled over from belly to back at 2.5 months & back to belly at 3.5 months. She will be 4 months on Monday. She hasn't sat up on her own yet. As far as food- I'm EBF so I'm sticking with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that breastfed babies be exclusively breastfed until 6 months so that's when I will give her food. Our ped told us it is no longer considered a milestone. The concern is that they are using both sides of their body equally. So if they are crawling, but only reaching forward with one side and then pulling up, that would be a cause of concern. DS doesn't crawl, he scoots on his bottom (10 months). The ped watched him, and after laughing (LOL) she said it was fine since he scoots with both sides equally and uses both feet and hands to push with. She thinks he'll go write to walking since he pops up on his feet and never crawl in the conventional sense.

At what age did your LO do the following..

rolling over to belly- 3.5 months
sitting unsupported- 5.5 months maybe?
crawling- DS never really crawled. He scooted and then went straight to walking at 12 months.
We started cereal at 5 months and I started pureeing fruits & veggies at 6 months. He started table foods at around 9 months.

Re: At what age did your LO do the following..

I looked up some info about the crawling, and it seems that so many less kids are doing it because of Back to Sleep. Like a PP said, as long as they are using both sides of their bodies, it's okay to skip. The concern I always was taught about is that kids who don't crawl might not learn to use their body bilaterally, which can further impact brain development in terms of other skills. Sorry for the thread hijack, but I found this very interesting!

My DD is 2.5 months, so she hasn't done these things yet!

Back to belly- 5-5.5 mos
Belly to back- 4.5mos
DS only rolls when he has to. Otherwise he doesn't like to roll around for the fun of it. Lol
Sitting up- 5mos. Now at 6mos he does great but will occasionally fall over bc he's so active. Lol
Baby food- purées at 4.5-5mos
Crawling- at 6.5 mos he's trying. He can get up on all fours and rocks.

I thought it peculiar too that this isn't a milestone. I myself as a baby never crawled either. My DS crawled only at 9m and walked well by 13m.

Read the work of pediatrician Emmi Pickler, she's layed out the natural physical progression baby should go through for healthy development in ways modern doctors don't even bother with anymore. crawling on all floors is not necessary but some form of pre-walking mobility should exist for child to develop spacial vision that they will need to walk/run and not bump into things.

She makes some point about "do not put your baby in devices or postions they cannot get to on their own" ... for instance she advocated against things like walkers and excersaucers, bouncy chairs and other types devices where you have to pick up the baby and put them in a position they cannot naturally get to on their own. And she says do not walk the baby until they can hold your hand without needing to use it for support. She writes that it interferes with normal physcial development and while child can make adjustments and devleop fine with these things, its is not optimal.
