FTWM and activities
Hi ladies, Just looking for some advice. I am a teacher. When I went back to work last year, I signed up DS for mommy and me swim, it was great. Over the summer, we didn't do any activities, but were very busy with playdates and vacations. Now that I'm back at work, I'm confused what to do. First, I was going to do swim lessons, but then I realized that would take away from our limited time together. Then I was looking into weekend music together and mommy and me classes, but now I'm thinking I should just relish every second we have together, and not over schedule. I have a ton of mommy friends for play dates, and an aquarium membership (we live close.) I'm really working on finding balance in my life, and not sure if scheduled activities would help us spend time together or end up hurting. Any advice? TIA

Library classes are great because they aren't every week. Check what's available there. I'm a teacher also and we signed DS up for an early My Gym class on a Saturday so it wouldn't take up the whole day.

I don't have advice (sorry!) but I'm kind of wondering the same thing. My plan is to see how september goes with the time at home and maybe sign up for My Gym on a Saturday or Sunday AM in October if that's possible.

Re: FTWM and activities
Thank you! Unfortunately every library near me only does week day classes, as does the local music together, so I would have to travel. I see more flexibility for 18 month olds, so I may wait (he is almost 11 months.)

DS is 2 1/2 and we have only done one swim class at this point. I don't like to be committed to something on weekends because dh has a flexible schedule and our plans always change.
We go to the playground, the indoor play place, the zoo and have playdates on the weekends.

Re: FTWM and activities
We are trying to only commit to one thing at a time. We did Music Together last winter, soccer this summer and just signed up for soccer this fall.

Re: FTWM and activities
your DS is still young so i wouldn't go crazy finding a class or something in order to spend time together. i am a teacher too and have a 3 and 5 yr old. i used to do the same thing and try to do gymboree or whatever but always wound up regretting it bc it was another thing on my agenda to do and all my kids really wanted to was to be playing at home or the park after we got home from school/work. now that my kids are getting a bit older i see how much busier it gets when they start school and am starting to miss those days of not having to do anything but just spend time together however they day takes us. i did find that i was more willing to sign up for things in the winter b.c the days are so short and i am looking for more to do, but when the weather is nice and days are long, i don't. usually it was just one class a week or on a weekend morning.

we haven't signed up for any extra activities. Things like little gym dh does at home with him.....same with the sports, soon we'll have to sign up for organized sports, so he can play more as a team, and safetswim looks pretty cool.

Re: FTWM and activities
The past 2 years we've held off on enrolling DS in any weekend activities (he's 3) until later in the fall.
Right now I feel there are too many outdoor activities we can still do, and I want to make the best of this time.
I'm looking forward to taking him to parks, playgrounds, etc. without sweating my butt off outside. And I don't want to be tied to an indoor activity on a gorgeous day.
My advice is to wait until November to sign up for any classes, and take each weekend as it comes right now.

Re: FTWM and activities
We try to do one activity a season- on the weekends. We always chose very early saturday morning so it doens't interfere too much with our time.
we did a swim class when she was younger, then we did Soccer in the spring. She's now enrolled in Dance class which is From September-June, so I'm not sure if we will do anything else.
All the classes/activities we've done are only about 45 mins-1 hour, so I don't mind it and don't feel like it take too much of my time away from her.
Also, she's with a sitter all day, so I know it's important for her to socialize with others her age.

Re: FTWM and activities
I personally don't like to have a strict schedule of activities on the weekends b/c it's my ONLY time to NOT have to rush to/from where ever .......
And I like to spend the weekends getting together w/ friends/family so DH and I can relax a bit and enjoy the boys, and the boys can have fun w/ their cousins, friends etc AND us ......

Re: FTWM and activities
My girls go to piano and ballet during the weekends. Every season we pick up a different activity. Now for fall, we will pick up bowling. For Winter, we do Ice skating. I try to do as much family time as possible. Usually the best times are when we are all in the dinning table talking about our day. It's a much do thing in my house.

Re: FTWM and activities
Don't worry about it too much. We do one class during the weekends. This way, I get alone time with DS. Will do the same with DD. IMO... It's enough.
