Play dates & vaccinations...

I have a friend that had her baby 2 months after I had DD.... She recently told me she's decided to not vaccinate her child.... I on the other hand, will be giving DD all the required vaccinations. I spoke to her pediatrician and he's advised me to keep DD away from this child.

So with that being said, how would you present this to your friend when the time comes for play dates?

I'm just curious, why does your ped want DD kept away from her? Is it becuase after some vaccines your DD might temporarily be contagious to a non-vaccinated child? If the reason is that the other child might be contagious, I'm just thinking wouldn't your DD be protected if she is vaccinated? Also, if this child is younger than yours she would always be "behind" your child if you were both on regular vaccine schedules. I'm sorry, I'm just not following your doctor's logic. Chat Icon

I don't get that. Your child will be protected by whatever shots they got, but the unvaxed child will not. ITA with the pp that your child might be contagious if they've recently had a shot, but peds work on different schedules anyway, so that'll be the case even if your friend's child was fully vaccinated. Both children have the same chances of getting things like colds. I'd let the kids play.

Vaccines aren't 100% effective, so that is probably the reason the ped says to stay away. If that child has the measles, etc. your child could potentially still get it.

Of course your child WILL be going to school with unvaccinated children, and probably be around them their entire life without knowing.

I have never heard of a ped telling someone to forever stay away from a child who is not vaccinated. My nephews are not vaccinated and I asked my ped about it when my dd was a newborn (just for the first month or so) and he said it is fine and to just keep them apart when they are sick - which we would do anyway, which any kid).

I was just going to write this exact statement....

I know she may come into contact with kids that have not been vaccinated and I cannot control those situations, but if there are some that I can avoid, I will.

I would only avoid this child if you are planning to also avoid any Gymboree-type classes, Music Together-type classes, or Mommy and Me groups over the next few years. It's not like they ask for vaccination records when you pay for these!

Even from preschool onward, your child will ALWAYS be among unvaccinated children, and you won't know which children they are. It's not that hard to get around the laws, I know a few different people who have successfully done it.

This makes absolutely no sense to me.....if you're so confident in vaccines, then why would you be worried?

That makes absolutely no sense Chat Icon Even a vaccinated child can be a carrier for whatever disease or illness the vaccination is protecting against. I don't see your doctor's logic.

That doesn't make sense. I have a friend who has 2 children who are not vaccinated. They go to the supermarket, beach, parks, school, mall, etc, etc. That would mean your child could not leave the house just in case he comes in contact with anyone who may not be vaccinated. Like others have said, I would keep them apart if they are sick but I would do that in general.

Well it's not something I really agree with, I'd still have my kids play with friends that were unvaccinated, but it does make sense. If your child has a single dose of any vaccine they aren't immune to those diseases. They may be when they are finished the series, but for example, your 18 month old gets the MMR and at 24 months (before the second dose at 4) is exposed via an unvaccinated friend to measles, your 18 month old can totally get it. You are not immune to many diseases until the end of the series and even then it's not 100%. I get what your doctor is saying, if your unvaccinated friends are exposed than they can give it you, however, on the other hand pretty much any young child can also do the same thing.

ETA: It's not a matter of being confident in a child's vaccines, but due to the fact that you aren't really immune till you've received the whole series it takes a long time to really be immune to diseases vs. having a less severe case.
