BFing Moms- Please Help Me

DD is usually so peaceful and calm. Certain nights recently she has been unable to soothe, crying and awake all the time. The doctor thinks it might be due to what I am eating. I think she has been fussy around times I have eaten red pepper flakes, hot sauce, broccoli in garlic sauce... etc. So she told me to watch my diet- but I have no idea what I need to avoid besides spicy foods. Did you have to avoid certain foods while BFing? Which ones? Please help! If I can make her stop crying by eliminating certain foods- I will do it, I just don't know which ones I should be getting rid of!

I cut out dairy and that seemed to help. You can always eliminate all of the things you suspect, see if it makes a difference and then slowly bring them back... the only issue is that babies change so quickly that it might be hard to find a direct correlation between foods and the crying... good luck.

BFing Moms- Please Help Me

I've never had to do it, but some ppl say that cruciferous (sp?) foods- broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc. bother baby. Other common foods that can aggrevate are spicy foods, garlic, dairy, chocolate, caffeine. If you noticed a correlation with the foods you mentioned, start with eliminating those. I have read that it takes a while for those to leave your system. You could also try baby massage and gripe water if you think it might be gas. GL!

I learned the hard way that spinach dip affects my DD. I also had onions the other night & she pooped a lot more than normal but didn't seem to be in pain.

Re: BFing Moms- Please Help Me

my doc has told me and I have read that the most common culprit is milk protein intolerance, NOT gassy or spicy foods. I would eliminate dairy for 2 weeks before eliminating anything else...

Oh, just remembered also reading that caffeine can bother some babies and make them fussy.

and to answer your question - the first few weeks I did try to eat mild foods just in case but soon ate normally and it didn't bother my dd. I do try to limit caffeine though and of course alcohol.

Re: BFing Moms- Please Help Me

I in the end basically eliminated everything. Once Bfing I never ate the gassy veggies. My twins were so gassy, I cut out some dairy, like what you will find in the dairy isle. there was a big difference! but it was still bad, so I cut out all dairy, like things cooked with dairy and there was no real difference. So I added it back in.
Months later they were still screaming and a GI dr was pushing formula on me and I didnt find that acceptable. I spoke to my LC again and we went through my diet and cut out all veggies! It was really hard bc im almost a vegetarian, but in a days time I had 2 different babies. Now at 11 months old I can really eat what ever I want. The girls digestive systems are just more mature and can handle it.
You will figure it out!!

How old is your baby? I eat spicy foods, dairy, gassy foods, etc and it never bothered her. Around 6 weeks till probably 12 weeks she was a bit fussy at times, but that's part of the age.

You could try eliminating one or two foods and she if it helps, but you really dont have to eliminate spicy foods or gassy foods. You could have the dr check your baby's stool to see if she/he has a dairy allergy. That's very common.

Good luck!

ITA - my DD went through this phase too. (We called it the Graveyard Shift. Good times). It's part of the age, I think. I limited caffeine to one cup of coffee a day, but I didn't cut anything out.

I'd do this. The only thing that I ever ate that really bothered my daughter was THai food. Looooove the food, but never again while BF'ing!
