Would you have your child miss school for a concert?

DD loves the Fresh Beat Band and they just added a show for 9/19 which is a Tues. The show starts at 3:30. DD will be in her second week of Kindergarten and I would hate to have her miss school or leave early. DH thinks it's a bad idea, but we've been trying to get tickets all summer. We even thought we had tickets and went to one of the shows and we were denied entry. Seeing the look on DD's face was heartbreakingChat Icon. She doesn't talk about it anymore so DH thinks that she's forgotten but I know she'll bring it up sooner or later. What should I do?

I know school is important but at this early stage in the year I think I would let her go to the concert as that memory will be priceless and one she will probably remember forever. I would pick her up early, that way she gets some school in and some FBB in too!

I'd let her go. What a wonderful memory she'll have for a lifetime. This isn't something frivolous she's missing school for; it's a big deal!

I wouldn't have her miss a whole day for a 3:30 show but I might take her out early. Personally I wouldn't even tell her and then surprise her.

Its kindergarten, meh
No she won't remember this concert when she's 20 but she'll remember it for a long long while. LOL

If you want to take her, take her. I agree with a half day.

I'd get the tickets, and pull her out of school early. I agree with the PP that said not to tell her, and just let it be a surprise !!

Take her and do the half day. In kindergarten most of the important stuff gets done in the morning anyway since the kids are usually tired by the end of the day.

Re: Would you have your child miss school for a concert?

I guess I'm the minority - but I don't think missing ONE day of school for a really special event w/ Mom & Dad is a big deal ......

Even if it were 5th or 7th or 10th grade - it's ONE day !!

I would take her out for a half a day - 2 hours isn't a big deal in kindergarten.

I don't think it's a big deal to miss a couple of hours, and would do it. But, is the concert on the 19th which is Wednesday or the 18th which is Tuesday? Tuesday the schools are closed for jewish holiday.

Re: Would you have your child miss school for a concert?

I am definitely the minority here. I would not have my son miss school for a concert.

I pull DS out of preschool all the time but things will change once he starts elementary school. I think it may be disruptive to the teacher to leave early.

If you did take her, I would have her miss as little time as possible.

Re: Would you have your child miss school for a concert?

Would you even have to take her out that early if the show is at 3:30?

Don't most schools end at 2:30ish? Could you take her out an hour or so early or as the other ladies suggested, at lunch time for a half day so it is less disruptive?

I would totally do it!

Re: Would you have your child miss school for a concert?

It is a Wed, and although I can't go because unlike her, I can't miss half a day of school for a concert ( I teach) DH is definitely taking her. I love the idea of suprising her! She'll only miss half a day, and I don't think it's a big deal. Thanks for your responses.

In kindergarten I would but only for a half day. I would not tell her ahead of time only becuase I'd be worried she would slip up and tell the teacher (or other kids who would very likely tell the teacher) and I wouldn't really want that getting around. I doubt the teacher would be very happy if she knew about it, so I'd keep it on the DL. Have fun!

Re: Would you have your child miss school for a concert?

As a mom I would say sure- go for it!

As a teacher- I miss the days when parents put school first. I had perfect attendance until I had chicken pox or spinal surgery in elementary school.

I hear many of you saying it doesnt make a difference but it actually does. Kdg is all about setting up routines in Sept. but with new standards in NY it is also about teaching. '

I think many of the posts about taking kids out of school for vacations and trips and visits etc shows just how low education is on America's priority list.

OK getting off my Chat Icon now
