My mom went to college and then got 2 Master's degrees during my childhood. She started to work when I was in HS. I thought having a mom who was a student was great. I am a working mom. I have some flexibility being self employed but it is not nearly as much as people think.

ETA: I answered the poll saying my mom was a SAHM even though my mom was in school.

My mom was a SAHM just like me until I was in first grade, then worked in the schools just like I plan...

My mil was. SAHM & never returned.

Kind of "other" - my mom worked from home (runs a daycare) and I work and she watches my DD.

ETA: DH's mom was a SAHM, so it was impt to both me and my DH that the most I work is only part-time (especially my DH-he preferred for me to not work fulltime).

My mom went back to work when I was 7 (& my brother was 4); I've worked all along (DS are 4.5 & 2.5 years old), but it's actually less expensive for me to stay home, so I just became a SAHM.

My mom was a SAHM and I work but am able to work from home a significant portion.

Part of the reason I chose to go so far in my career was because of the way I felt about my mother's choices as I was growing up. I always felt that my mother was so dependent on my father and because of that my father exerted so much control over her. It is not a dig on SAHM or anything but just how it was in my family. From as long as I can remember ( 7yo or something) I always knew that I did not want to ever have to be stuck in a situation because I had no alternative. I am not saying this is how it always is but just how it was in my house and why I felt it was important to be "independent".

My answer is "other".
My mom worked PT (was home by 11/12 everyday). Started working FT when my sister was in pre-k. (she's the youngest).

I am a SAHM and both kids will be in school FT in 2 weeks. I plan on looking for very PT work just to keep my busy and get me out of the house for a bit.

SAHM Poll about our own moms:

My mom worked from when I was a baby until I was in kindergarten, but she worked 3-11pm (nurse) so she was around most of the day. After baby #3, she stayed home for five years, then went back part time again. I have worked full time since DD was born but I just left my teaching job to be self-employed, working from home. I also gave up a 3-hour round-trip commute, which will make a huge difference for us.

My mom worked part time as a dance teacher and I have now taken over. But the hours are afternoons until evening, so I'm with my kids all day before they are/were school aged, but then I can't get them off the bus and I only have dinner with them twice during the week, which is the downside.

My mom was home FT with my older siblings until they were in HS but she returned to work PT when I was in 2nd grade and FT I think whne I was in 3rd.

My MIL was a SAHM but then returned to work as an aide in the schools...not sure how old DH was at the time

I am a SAHM...it just happened that way, wasnt planned. I think its more important to DH that I SAH than it is to me though.

My Mom worked full time and I am a SAHM.

I saw the struggles my Mom had with not being able to be there for everything she wanted to be there for, so I am especially thankful that I am able to be a SAHM.

My mom stayed home for first couple years then left me with grandparents when she worked part time... I think it wouldnt have affected me much, but when we started school she started working more, her attention on work took away from us, and we felt it. I really felt it when I turned 13, she made me responsible to come to empty home and watch my 8yo sister for 30-45min till she came home, this after, after school programs etc...

I decided to stay home partly because of issues with my mom working. Partly because I distrust daycares and nannies and mother in laws

My mother worked as a teacher (with her masters)

I have my masters & yet I'm a SAHM.

My Mom was a SAHM, my MIL was a SAHM, & I am a SAHM.
Although, my Mom did go back to school/worked PT to become a nurse when her youngest (me!)was 10 & I believe my MIL went back to work when her youngest was around 10.
I plan to return to school when my youngest is around that age as well!

My mom worked FT and I work PT. As much as I wish I could be a SAHM I think I do need to work here and there to keep my sanity. Too much time without my work environment makes me feel like I'm slipping up.
