btdt - help with clothes... how much do i need and of what?

i started getting the baby's nursery ready and putting clothes into drawers and the closet etc. i have so many different sizes, so i feel like in reality, she has almost nothing. tell a 1st time clueless mom, how many outfits do you really go through in a day at the beginning? how much do i need - of everything... bibs, burp clothes, blankets, sleep sacks, swaddles, outfits, pj's, onsies etc?
i am due the end of october so i'm not going to be lucky enough to throw a diaper and a short sleeve onsie on her and call it a day... so what is my best bet mostly? long sleeve onsies and those little pants?
help, i'm lost!Chat Icon Chat Icon

eta - and this is embarassing but... will i need shoes for her at the beginning? what sizes should i even be looking for?Chat Icon

No shoes at all. As a matter of fact I believe the docs advise against them until theyre toddlers.

My favorite is the nightgowns - so easy to change a diaper. Or a onesie with snaps and pants.

I couldnt tell you a #, but Id say maybe 3 outfits a day in the beginning. My kids always pooped out of their diaper when infants. I cant tell you how many outfits were ruined! They will grow out of sizes SO super fast so dont buy too much of the smaller ones. As a matter of fact when I had my 9lb baby I couldnt even use some of the smaller 0-3 clothes LOL

Good luck!!!

you will probably hear a million responses since everyone is different, but i will tell you what my advice is. dd was born in march so it wasn't warm weather yet either. for the first 2-3 weeks she pretty much stayed in NB size footie pj's. I'd say you need maybe 3-5 of those. Depending on whether it was thinner or thicker material, sometimes I would layer a short-sleved onsie underneath. Maybe 3-5+ of those. Don't go crazy with the NB stuff because you really will only use it for a few weeks before baby grows out of it, but it was definitely helpful when the 0-3 stuff was swimming on her. Our dd was 8 lbs. when she was born and at 2-3 weeks was unable to wear any of the NB anymore though. We are in the minority here, but dd HATED being swaddled at night and it actually got her more worked up when she couldn't move her arms. I had the swaddle stuff, but we really didn't use it. Same with the baby mitts- had them but didn't use them. During the day we pretty much always had a blanket around her though- I would keep plenty of swaddling and snuggling blankets around. Lots of burp cloths- like at least a dozen or more. We didn't use bibs for the first few months at all. We didn't use any shoes either for a while, but we did use socks whenever she was in something that didn't have feet. Lots of baby hats too- you want to keep their little heads warm. I would suggest to keep out your NB and 0-3 month and 3 month stuff- pack the rest away for a little bit. Long sleeve onsies and footie pants or pants and socks were the most common outfits I recall. Or little long-sleved dresses with pants or tights. I found carter's stuff tends to run small so figure you may be able to put baby in 3 month pj's sooner than you expect- and it will be the first stuff she/he will outgrow too.
Good luck!!! Chat Icon

Re: btdt - help with clothes... how much do i need and of what?

Normally, I went through 2 outfits a day, a "day" outfit and pjs to sleep in at night. Sometimes I had to change DS once or more during the day, but only if he spit up a lot or had a pee pee accident. I had tons of onesies, both long and short sleeve. I loved the ones w/the attached mittens in the beginning (so he didn't scratch himself). I also really liked the one piece play/sleep outfits.

When DS was a few months old I started using the waterproof bibs and love them. They keep him neat and dry and are so easy to clean (you can just wipe them clean). While I love my adorable cloth bibs, it became are real PITA to have to wash them all the time. I have a nice handful of bibs and probably about a dozen or so burb cloths.

I think I only had a couple of swaddle blankets. I liked the sleep sacks so much better. Much easier to get the baby in and out of (especially in the middle of the night), and DS couldn't kick out of the sleep sack. I also have about a dozen or so blankets that people either made or bought for DS, but I haven't used them much yet.

As for shoes, I still rarely put them on DS (he's 9 months). Usually only when we are going out.

You will be fine and I'm sure you have more than enough. And whatever you don't have, you will get.

No shoes needed, just socks at that age or bare feet indoors. Since the baby is born in late Oct you will need a few onsies for under clothing and just to wear around the house. I would say right now I change dd (11 weeks) about 3 times a day. I love bibs, they help a lot especially during the teething stage. I have about 25 bibs and I'm always running out if don't do laundry every other day. DD1 loved to be swaddled and I had 4 swaddles and that was more than enough. My second hates to be swaddled. So it depends.

It sort of also depends on your style towards dressing the baby, I know some people love pjs for infants and dress them in pjs all day, I get my girls dressed in clothing every day so for me I like to have a lot of options. I know my girls have way too much clothing but I can't help it sometime Chat Icon

No shoes are needed. Children should not wear shoes until they are actually walking. If you wanted to put robeez on for warmth when going outside you can do that, but at home, no shoes.

It is also really difficult to keep socks on infant feet (I liked Gap and Old Navy for infant socks).

As for clothing, for the first month or so my kids wore footed pjs with a short sleeve side snap undershirt until their umbilical cord stump came off. Then I switched to the crotch snap undershirt.

Did your OBGYN estimate how big your child might be? How big were you and your DH at birth? Although my children were both in the 7 lb range, they were 21 inches long and barely wore newborn sizes. I would get one pack of carters undershirts and about 5 footed sleepers. If you can find the zipper kind they were my favorite because it was much easier to zipper than snap.

I would put my kids into a new footed sleeper/undershirt every day but most of the time they needed a new one more than once a day. HTH

I swore by the footed sleeper outfits with both of mine. We have 10 or more in every size, and they live in them.

When they were that little I had the motto of if it's not dirty dont change it. I also had to change my ideas of what was dirty. I had twins with acid reflux. They spit up ALL the time. It is amazing they gained any weight. They lived in the footed sleep and plays for months. I probably went through 2 of those a day per baby. Lots of bibs and lots of burp cloths. I used the cloth diapers they sell at BRU as burp cloths.

Re: btdt - help with clothes... how much do i need and of what?

Thank u all so much! I have about 16 burp cloths - 6 regular and a 10 pack of the cloth diapers. 1 package of the adan + anais swaddle blankets, 4 regular swaddle me's and 2 sleep sacks - but ive kept all those in packaging bc they say newborn size (7-14lbs) so im not sure if i should exchange for the next size upChat Icon i havent bought anything in newborn size as far as pj's or onsies etc - just what we've gotten as gifts. If i buy stuff ive been buying 3 months size bc i figure she'll need those either way through the winter. We have a 32wk sono on Monday so maybe they can give us an estimate on how big the baby we will be, otherwise at our next one at the end of sept. I was 9.4lbs thoughChat Icon so im thinking i might have big babies... dh was only 5lbs but he was 4wks early, whereas i was a week late. Looks like i just need to worry about pj's and long sleeve onsies and pants. Thanks again!!

yeh.. my ds is 1 mnth, and i went nuts telling people to getus onesies. He doesnt use half of them. He is in one onesie a day unless he sputs up and it is soaked through. We have been putting him in footsie pjs at night to keep him warm which keeps him somewhat sleeping longer. Ds hates the mitts and socks. He will be in socs more as the weather changes, but no shoes. we have started stocking up on clothes for teh winter= onesies, pantsoutfits, long sleeve clothes. I am amazed how much i though i needed vs in reality what i needed. So different. BTW- dont go crazy with hats either.

It so depends on the kid. DS#1 was a happy spitter and so we went through numerous outfits a day (both him and us). DS #2 hardly ever spit-up, so it was just one outfit a day usually.
