Baby clothes - what do i need??? BTDT especially come on in

So i had my shower and am going through all the clothes and wondering if i have enough (or too much) of certain things.....

Gowns - are these a good itemChat Icon They seem weird to me and some of the NB size are so long. When would you use these - at night while swaddled? During the day when awake?

Sleep N play - im thinking these i will use alot to keep the baby in - so how many do you need?? I many deliver early so im thinking i'll get a little more out of NB sizes

Onesies - same as above

Socks/booties - how many do you need in each size?

Receiving blankets - i only got 4 -- is that enough (also got miracle blanket and sleep sack)

My baby will be here April/May - would i be using a onesie under the sleep n play?

Am I the only one this confused about a tiny little babies wardrobeChat Icon

Re: Baby clothes - what do i need??? BTDT especially come on in

For DS we never used the gowns. We had a few but I just never put them on him.

He lived in sleep n plays for the first couple of months. He was a January baby so we had the fleece ones with a long sleeved onesie underneath. (Being April or May I would still prob put a onesie underneath -- maybe short sleeve instead) We probably had 10 snp's and even more onesies.

DS was in NB size for about a month (was born at 8.2lbs)

Be sure to snag receiving blankets from the hospital. Those were the best. We ended up with 4 of them and I used them every single day. They were the best for swaddling.

It seems like a lot now but you'll figure it out! Trust me!

Re: Baby clothes - what do i need??? BTDT especially come on in

I think you will probably get a lot of different answers because people like to use different things but personally...I didnt use any of the gowns I received. I just didnt see the point of them. Maybe they are easy for diaper changes but DD did not seem comfortable in them..she was too warm, onesies were just easier (she was a july baby though).
onesies, went through a TON. always always can use more!
sleep and plays - yes used these a ton also, but not so much in the summer.
also I think you can never have enough socks. I never used booties.
as for blankets, my mom was forever nagging me about having a blanket and yes I would use them for air conditioned places etc, but I didnt much see the point of receiving blankets for a baby born in July. but might be different for some people.
I did use the swaddle me and miracle blanket a ton and ended up buying a couple extra so I had on hand when one was in the wash. HTH!

Gowns - i got a few and tried to usethem but I just didn't like them....so to me they were a waste.

Sleep N play - my kids all lived in these!! my older DS was 6lbs 8oz so h wore NB sixes for about a month. My twins were smaller and wore them a little longer. I couldn't have enough!

Onesies - i put them under everything they wore, so at least 1 a day, but usually more in the beginning b/c of accidents, spit-up etc. unless it was a hot day and we were outside i always put one under their outfits as newborns/infants

Socks/booties - a few, i didn't need to many when they were little. i kept them in sleep n plays a lot

Receiving blankets - i think 4 is enough, i wouldn't buy any more. we took 1 from the hospital plus got a few as gifts after the kids were born.

Re: Baby clothes - what do i need??? BTDT especially come on in

We never used the gowns, we used sleep n plays or sleep sacks at night, probably had about 7 of them so if a few got dirty i have a couple extra until i could wash the dirty ones.

Onesies were big with me because we had DD in August. I had probably 10-14 of them, since she would go through 2-3 a day, i had extra to use.

Socks, i didn't have many when she was born because she was born in Augus and i would usually just put her in the sleep n plays. She didn't start wearing socks until October-ish so 3 months.

Recieving blankets i had 2 packs of them, i think there were 8 total we used as blankets and to swaddle her in too.

I never used a onesie under her sleep n play, even when winter came, i thought it was over doing it.

ds was born 6.6lbs and i used newborn clothes for about a month and a half.

he was an oct baby so i used onsies all the time - cant have enough of those.
I didnt keep him in snp all day long.. he had reg pjs (fleece ones) and would put reg clothes on him during the day. Never used the gowns.
I think i had at least 7 Pjs and countless outfits.

I had more than enough receiving blankets - never used the actual swaddle mes - just used the receiving blankets as a swaddle in the begining - he didnt care for them though. i had 2 cotton sleepsacks that i used on him. when he went in his crib at about 3 months i used the fleece sleepsacks and the fleece pjs with a ss onsie bc his room was alot colder than the rest of the house.

Re: Baby clothes - what do i need??? BTDT especially come on in

I used the gowns in the beginning at night when I was changing a diaper at every feed. More for convenience because those snaps at 2am can be a PITA.

Once he was sleeping longer stretches I used the Sleep N Plays. And I preferred the zippers versus snaps. Just easier.

DS was born in June. And we are big a/c people so we put a onesie under everything. Also because I felt if he had an explosive poop it was extra protection for the outfit he was wearing.

Socks and booties are a personal thing. DS always kicked them off. He was born in June so I didn't make to much of a big deal about it.

I BFd, so I used receiving blankets a lot to cover up when I was nursing in public. Or to wrap him in the infant carrier. Never really used them at home. They didn't really get dirty but I still had about 7 so I could get through a week without having to worry about laundry, although I think I did his clothes probably twice a week.

eta - I didn't keep much of the NB clothing. DS was born 9lbs 3oz. And even though the 0-3 were on the bigger side on him, NB barely lasted at all.

Re: Baby clothes - what do i need??? BTDT especially come on in

DS was born April 20th and we used sleep and plays the most. I had some outfits I would put on him when we would go out but probably for the 1st month or so it was just sleep and plays. Since the weather can be variable around this time i did have onesies but I only used them if I felt it was going to be a little chilly. Socks I used more once the weather got a litter better and I started getting him out of the sleep and plays. Recieving blankets are essential. I used them for everything, as blankets, to change him on as burp clothes.

Good luck!! it is confusing but you'll figure out what works best Chat IconChat Icon

Re: Baby clothes - what do i need??? BTDT especially come on in

BTDT mom here....great questions!!!

Gowns - I didn't love those. Used them here and there but maybe just keep a few to see if you like them. They do make for very quick, easy diaper changes...my DD was big and she just never seemd comfy in them.

Sleep & Play - I assume these are just those feety pj things with snaps from the ****** up? If so - DD was born late June and was in these a lot her first few mos...it was a hot summer so we stayed home a lot in the a/c...if we weren't going anywhere this is what she had on...and would sleep in these too. They are great - def. have a lot of those. Depends how often you think you will do laundry....I hate doing it too often so I had a good 8 of them probably...some have less and just do wash more often.

Onesies - just the plain white undershirt ones? I always had DD in a onesie under her outfit or pj's in colder mos...she was born in summer so just under her pj's when she was a newborn. Those side snap undershirts are best though for when you first bring them home - until the umbilical cord falls off. Then you will want to use the onesie undershirts.
I HATE long sleeve onesies even in the winter...just annoying to put anything on over them - I feel like the sleeves always ride up. I registered for so many long sleeves and never use them at all.

Socks/booties...I had SO many newborn size - not sure why b/c I had a summer baby. Didn't use any. Even if I had a winter baby I don't think I would have used them b/c I would have had her in feety pj's or outfits most of the time. I really hate socks on newborns - they always fall off. I LOVE robeez shoes - they are soft soled...they help socks stay on and the shoe itself has elastic so never comes off....I always put these on to complete the outfit but mainly to keep her socks on in winter.

Receiving blankets - you probably have enough. Your baby may be a spitter upper and then you'd want a fresh one on hand if he/she spits up on it. But 4 sounds like enough. I only swaddled her all day in the blankets for her first week or so....then only swaddled at night and I always used the miracle blanket. Once you see if your DC likes the miracle blanket - get a backup so you always have a clean one. Same goes for sleep sack - they also make long sleeve ones - I prefer those in winter since as I mentioned above I hate long sleeve onesies under things.

HTH!

just read all the above posts...
Good point about receiving blankets...I used these also for laying baby down on things...she was a big spitter upper so I always had one under her in any seat I put her in or if I layed her on the bed or anywhere.
Also...another good tip - the hospital is for stealing Chat Icon - I took I think 3 receiving blankets from there. I sent DH home with 2 the first night and we left with 1 the day we took her home!

I also agree zippers on the sleep and plays are easier than snaps - but I couldn't find many zippered ones until the 12 mo size...for some reason all the smaller sizes seem to be snaps. Agree snaps are a PITA at 2am!!! The gowns are just somewhat awkward though and got all twisted on my DD...I didn't love them.

Re: Baby clothes - what do i need??? BTDT especially come on in

DS was born in October - we use long sleeve onesies and we have about 8 and that seems to be working well. He never wore NB size, so I would wait to see how big your baby is before buying any more NB stuff. I had to return a slew of NB stuff that we got as gifts.

We have 5 receiving blankets and that's more than enough for us.

LOVE the sleep and plays.

We used the gowns in the beginning because it was just easier to change diapers at night and for 2am feedings. They were ok.

I have been getting gowns as gifts from many people and I love them. Since there will be lots of changings during the night, I figure it will be that much faster and easier to get the job done. No snaps or zippers here....

Re: Baby clothes - what do i need??? BTDT especially come on in

My suggestions

Gerber newborn zip or snap pj's- 2pks of 3
We liked the gowns but cut the elastic out of the bottom if it was to tight. I got 2 pks of 2 and would not buy anymore. Liked, but got more use out of the gerber zip up pj's.
Sleep n play's- about 5
1-2 nicer "outfits" By this I mean shirt and top seperate
3pks onsies
4-6 recieving blankets
1-8pk cloth diapers for burping and on the changing table. That way if you get some poop on this you don't have to change out the whole thing just the cloth diaper part.
That's about it. We didn't bath that often and changed her clothes every night unless she got dirty and that was plenty.
