What should a guy wear to court? UPDATE

My friend and I have to appear in court for a tresspassing ticket (you guys may remember I got a beach tresspassing ticket back in May). I am going to be in business casual (I'm going straight from work) but can a guy wear shorts and a tee shirt?

So my friend and I were in business casual and we are standing with people in bikinis, cargo shorts, not a soul in a suit!!! It was so hot out there waiting in line to get into the courthouse!Chat Icon

So we finally get into court house---my friend's ticket was instantly dismissed because the officer that wrote him up filed it wrong but of course mine was filed correctly! After appearing in front of the judge, I sat back down and realizing I would be there for awhile, I took out my CPA review book. A scary woman officer yelled at me that if I didn't put it away she would throw me out! I actually asked if there was sign that said "no reading allowed" (there were no cell phone and electronics signs) and she just told me "its the rules." Crazy people! Anyways, I paid a $20 fine and was on my merry way!

Depends on the message the guy wants to send to the Judge. I would not go in anything less than a suit and tie.

Re: What should a guy wear to court? UPDATE

It's still better that you dressed for court. It shows respect for the judge. As an attorney I once had a judge yell at me for having a Poland Spring bottle with me. I found it odd because there is a pitcher of water there for the attorneys anyway. I have never brought in water since. Two weeks ago I had a cough and the pitcher was empty and the judge gave me time to go get some water. After the hearing I told him why I do not bring it anymore. He thought that the first judge was just acting crazy. I'm still not bringing water but I may if I know I have a cough.
