Car Seat Installation question
DH and I were just trying out installing the car seat. I have an '09 Nissan and the latches are on the door side and not the middle. my brother has a Honda and I know his latches are in the middle, but we recently went car shopping for a new Toyota and we noticed that the latches were also on the sides. My sister said that the car seat belongs in the middle. Is anyone else's car seat latch located on the sides and not the middle?

Re: Car Seat Installation question
I just took the car seat inspection class this morning so I know exactly what you're talking about. I have a nissan too and have the same issue. We ended up installing the car seat in the middle using the seat belt instead of the latches. The car seat is safest in the middle but it doesn't have to be put in the middle. The instructor said she's campaigning to make it a law to have the latches installed in the middle of all cars, she was pretty pissed about most cars not having latches in the middle seat.

Re: Car Seat Installation question
Check your manual. It depends on the type of seat and the kind of car. My infant seat was installed in the middle, but when we moved to a convertible, it was best behind the passenger.
You could also have it installed; there are a lot of places that'll do it for free. Most require an appointment though.

Car Seat Installation question
In DH's car (he has a corolla) we cannot install using LATCH in the middle. We can either use the belt in the center or LATCH on the side position. We choose to install the seat behind the passenger in his car.
My car (a mazda 5) does not even have a center seat. So center seat installation is not an option. DD was behind the passenger when she was in the infant seat and is now behind me (the driver) in her convertible seat.
We are prepping for #2 and the infant car seat will be installed behind the passenger side.
Don't buy a new car just to be able to install the car seat in the middle. It's not necessary. Car seats can be safely, properly, and effectively used in either side position as well.

Re: Car Seat Installation question
we have a subaru forester and cannot install car seats in the middle either. WE put DD behind the passenger seat. I'm now preggo with DS, and I'm not sure if we are going to keep DD behind the passenger seat and put Ds behind the driver, or vice versa, but nobody is in the middle.

Do you have a seat belt in the middle? If so, a seat belt installation is JUST AS SAFE as latch. Latch is just a matter of convenience, nothing more, nothing less.

Definitely DO NOT PANIC about this. I know it's tough, but you have to try not to over-think and over-worry a lot of things. Yes, you want the seat properly installed, but you have plenty of time and it'll get done. You certainly don't need a new car. There are a lot of places to get it professionally checked and they'll teach you how to do it.
It's good to know how to use the belt to strap the seat in anyway for when you're ever using someone else's car or if you travel.
You can use this link to search for a certified location to have your seat inspected or installed:

Deep breaths mamma!!! Everything will be totally fine!!!! You're safe drivers and will be even safer with the baby in the car. The only reason the center seat is suggested is if you get hit from the side while driving. But even if that happens, the baby is in a very safe little shell and is well-protected for your normal fender benders and such, as well as even scarier crashes. We got rear ended when DD was 16 weeks and I was so scared but she was just babbling away like nothing happened.
This is more important than anything, just for a little reference in advance since car seat safety is on your mind. The clip should be up at the chest and the straps should be snug:

I wouldn't buy a new car for this reason... Keep in mind, people with two children HAVE to use the side ones. I understand where you're coming from - our LO will be in the middle, too. But try to keep in mind that it isn't uncommon for babies to be on the side.

Re: Car Seat Installation question
We had ours in the middle in our old car , we had Sonata, but now it will be on the side since we already have one carseat in the car for DD and I don't think it 'll fit in the middle . You just have to make sure it's installed the correct way.
