Reasons for not vaccinating

I do not want to start a debate. I am just wondering what people's reasonings are for not vaccinating their children. The more I research it the more I am against vaccines. However, my concerns for not vaccinating are that I would feel like it was my fault if god forbid my children ever got the measles or another horrible disease. Has anybody else had the same feelings of being torn over this issue?

The things they put in them (aborted baby fetus, toxic chemical, ect). How some kids die from them, some kids change after they get them, plus they don't even guarantee that you will not get whatever you are getting vaccinated against. I just read a study that shows more than half of the children who got the whooping cough were already vaccinated. T me to put your child through all of those risks to not even have a guarantee that they will be protected confuses me. Also, a lot of the studies put out are supported through the companies that produce the vaccines so in my eyes, of course they will make the vaccines seem safe. It is similar to my feelings on gmo foods. The company that makes gmo foods (Monsanto) says that it is safe. However, no studies on humans were ever done to prove that it is. I just think all of that stuff is a little shady and is more of a business. Just my opinion, again don't want to start a debate. But o. The flip side, I am a little scared of not getting shots god forbid my kids ever caught something. I would feel that it is my fault.

I think it's a personal choice. DS had all of his on time. With DD most were given very late. She's almost 3 and still hasn't had the MMR. At this point I think delaying them is best for my family.

And also, I feel strongly that the reason we have such a Hugh rate of cancer, developmental disorders, ect is bc we put so much crap into our body and we don't even know what is in the food we are eating. I am starting to feel this way with vaccines.

I think you need to consider the sources you are getting your information from. You say the pharm. companies are a biased source, I would say more than likely the sources you are getting this info from are biased as well.
Are you reading medical journals and valid scientific studies based on research?

I also don't think the comparison of GMO foods and vaccines is a fair one. Vaccines have been around for 70+ years and have proven benefits.
GMOs are new and have no real data to support any kind of claims for or against them.

Re: Reasons for not vaccinating

I am not pro vax, but many children that are getting pertussis and saying they were vaccinated were not fully vaccinated. People are not doing the boosters and therefore their vaccinations are not complete. I debate everyday about DS getting his MMR on time, he's almost 10 months, but measles rates are on the rise. Part of this is from people not vaccinating. But mainly we are a very transient population, many immigrants come here that may not be vaxed or people travel abroad and come back. DS has never even had a cold, I can't imagine him having the measles. I'm terrified of the unknown, but right now feeling vaxing is safer than not.

I agree you need to consider your sources carefully. For the record, vaccines DO NOT contain aborted fetuses.Source: http://voices.yahoo.com/fetal-tissue-production-vaccinations-do-335100.html?cat=71

Since you don't want a debate, I read up on vaccinations & decided to do it based on a delayed schedule & leave it at that.

My sister decided not to vaccinate because she didn't believe that she should be injecting something into her children that would make their bodies produce antibodies against a virus. She went the holistic route with her kids until it doesn't suite her & then goes for medicine. She has to claim a religious exemption because in NY, they do not allow for philosophical exemptions. My other friend did the same thing.

I have a family member that doesn't vaccinate because she thinks her children will get autism. She lies on the forms for school and says it's against her religion.

I have no problem with my children getting vaccines-- however, I am very much against the prescribed schedule.

I have only allowed 1 vaccine at a time for my kids. Does that mean I have to truck them in to the ped more times than I like? Sure, but to me it's worth it-- first, I prefer not to overwhelm their bodies with more than one vaccine at a time (particularly when many vaccines such as DTP and MMR are multiple vaccines in one to begin with!), and also because in the event of a reaction, we would immediately know which vaccine it was that caused said reaction.

I also have given certain vaccines (particularly the MMR) later than recommended-- both my kids got theirs around age 3. You often hear about toddlers regressing into autism right around the time they got the MMR (and sometimes DTP), which is commonly around 12-18 months. Perhaps the vaccine triggered the regression (I am not sure myself, and don't want to start a debate on it), or perhaps 12-18 months is the time when regressive autism manifests itself-- who knows? If it happened to my child, I would spend the rest of my life wondering if it were the vaccine. So I postponed MMR and DTP during that vulnerable window of time.

However, both my children were completely up to date on their vaccines by the time they started nursery school, and I do give them thimerasol free flu shots each year.

I'm all for alternate vaccination schedules. I go in twice as often with my kids and their vaccines are up to date.

Much of the literature you read has a spin put on it one way or another: ie the whooping cough vaccine stats... They are correct but you have to remember you are more than 8 times more likely to get whooping cough if you are not vaccinated. Vaccine is 98 percent effective... But that means 2 percent not. Currently there are more vaccinated people... But numbers will change as unvaccinated goes up and herd immunity goes down.

I've even read the original mmr article... It doesn't quite say what people have interpreted it to say...seems ingests a link between gastrointestinal illness and autism.

Hopefully it will put you at mental ease.

Reasons for not vaccinating

I've had whooping cough 3 times as an adult. I would never want my child to have it (not that anyone does of course). It's horrible. I would vaccinate just from experience of having it.

Reasons for not vaccinating

I vaccinated ds 1. He had a terrible reaction to the mmr. Ds 2 has had 1 shot, i cose to wait or not vaccinate at all. depends on school. i decided bc of the things that are in the vaccine. i do not see why such young bodies have to have such harsh, harmful things injected into them.

Re: Reasons for not vaccinating

My only advice is speak to your doctor.

I feel like too many people today attend the university of Google (heard that from a friends which is so awesome).

I have heard a lot of information on both sides, some made up, some not.

I have spoken to a neurologist and a vaccination expert. Spoke to them about my concerns on what I have read and seen. I even looked up some things on an anti vax website to see their point of view.

There is a risk to vaccinate.

But does the risk outweigh the reward? IMHO the answer is a resounding no. I felt, in the long run, that the anti vax movement has a legitimate point in some of their arguments, but when I speak to experts in the field of brains and shots I feel that the doctors are more credible.

It also sits badly with me that the autism and MMR argument started, for the most part, with a quack doctor (Wakefield). It was picked up by large groups, then found to have been completely wrong, misguided, and fake. So because of that I am weary of what comes out of the anti vax camp.

Like I said, some of what they say IS true. All vaccines do have risk. My choice is to take that small risk for the maximum reward.

Do what YOU feel is right. Don't take my word, or anyone elses. And please talk to your doctor before you make a decision based on whats SOLELY on the net.

We also have more awareness of developmental disorders and evaluation methods. Better research has helped us diagnose those who may need a little extra. And as far as cancer, yes we put a lot of crap in our bodies but we are also living long increasing our risks of these diseases.

Yes we can diagnose a developmental disorder more accurately but the I cannot contribute that as the only reason why the autism rates are so high. Autism has shot up at an unbelievable rate.......so much that it leaves too many questions unanswered.

This is our rationale as well. I'm pro-vax but I think the schedule is too aggressive. We spaced out DD's vaccines and will for this baby as well. Keep in mind that the later you start, the few vaccines the child will be required to get.

I think there a few reasons. One being its being reported more. In years past it was categorized as "retarded".

The facts are no one knows why autism is rising. It COULD be vaccinations. It COULD be pesticide. It COULD be the food/air whatever. No one knows.

But I agree that there are too many questions unanswered.

Re: Reasons for not vaccinating

I am pro vaccine, because when i get the letters home from my DD's school about whooping cough, measles, etc. I call up my ped and they tell me that she has the required vaccines and has the immunity to it so she will not catch it.

With having children in school and kids at home, we don't follow the complete recommended schedule, but we do give them all within a reasonable amount of time since I would hate for my older daughter to bring home something she is immune to, to give it to my younger one who has not yet been vaccinated against it. I have discussed this with my ped and we have a schedule which is agreeable to both of us.

I worked in a group home where several of the residents were autistic but mislabeled developmentally disabled because the services at the time of diagnosis were better for the developmentally impaired.

I think it is scary. You have to make a decision as a parent & hope with all of your heart that you made the right one - no matter which way you decide. Your child can be the 1 in whatever number who gets the bad side effects or the 1 that gets the disease/illness they would have been protected from.

Please be wary of ANY sources that you read. I read the book "Shot in the Dark"http://www.amazon.com/A-Shot-Dark-H-Coulter/dp/089529463X & still vaccinated. We had whooping cough rampant in our school district last year. I felt comfortable if my kids got it that they'd get a milder case of it because of the vaccine that received. Also I expect that my kids will travel outside of the country as I did so I wanted that peace of mind. One thing I found disturbing is tha that the pharmaceutical companies are financially protected from those rare complications that occur with the vaccines by the excise tax on vaccines.

Check out the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website for adverse reactions & look through their site as well. There is a lot of misinformation out there so please check your sources. If you're concerned about conspiracy, check other country sites of the more highly developed countries to see how they handle vaccines.
