Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

I just went to the baptism class for my DS. We are christening him July 28th. They said only one godparent has to be Catholic. I know my cousin baptized her son down in NC and her husband is not catholic. Call the church where you would like to have DD baptized. They can get you all the information. I know the pastor at my church wants everyone baptized so he would baptize your child. FM me if you would like the number for my church (my mother works there) so she's definitely be able to get you answers.

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

Every church I have talked to sometimes do have their own set of "rules" The ones in NY seem to be more lax while the ones in PA where I live are more strict. Where my boys were baptised we had to take a class (just once) and at least 1 of the godparents had to be catholic and had to have "papers" we can have 1 godparent that is "christian" but doesn't have to be catholic. Check where you want to get her baptised and ask for their rules.

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

yes, your child can be baptized catholic regardless of the religion of the parents. godparents must be catholic. some churches will ask for proof of that either through a letter from their church or a copy of the godparents' baptismal certificate.

I don't think it's wrong for a church to want god parents that are the religion of the church. IMO I think a non- Christian god parent is a bit ridiculous considering a god parent is in charge of the child's religious upbringing. IMO some people treat this religious tradition like it's just a fun cultural thing to pick their bff or whatever to be "god mother" and are sort of forgetting what it actually means. You can't expect all the churches to want to get involved in that. They're trying to propagate the religion, kwim? And ftr I'm not even Christian- it just always boggles my mind when people want non-Christian god parents.

Eta I'm really talking about non-Christian but I think you may have meant just non-catholic. I think the churches still have a right to apply the same standard as I explained but yes I know there's more leeway and you will find more churches willing to give that leeway.

Crashing...

DH and I were recently having this conversation because I am Jewish and he is Catholic. He's not too religious but neither am I, however we believe that our children should be raised a religion. We agreed on Catholic.

I understand what the poster said above however, it's not that I want to choice my BFF or have a popularity contest. I could honestly say I think I know more about the Catholic religion then the Jewish religion. Thank you to the OP for asking this question because I would LOVE to make one of my sisters a Godparent. Not because they can guide the niece/nephew through the religion, but because my sisters both have good morals and have grown up to be beautiful woman. They have stable careers and both put themselves through med school. While I can understand that it shouldn't be a popularity contest (and I agree, it should not), I think it should be someone that you trust with your child and believe to have similar values.

Thank you again to the OP for asking this question! I am book marking this post so that I can look back when we finally get pregnant and remember what everyone said. And good luck!

O! And PS - we asked around to different Catholic churches and some said we just needed to be married in a church to Baptize our children. Some said we didn't need to be, but we ended up doing a second small wedding to have the Catholic Church recognize our marriage and not have any future problems with that.

I get the sentiment but a godparent IS to guide the godchild through the religion. Imo it's like you're using a title for the wrong thing. Everything you said about your siblings is very beautiful but again imo none of it has to do with god parenting. To each their own though, esp. if your church allows it.

Also, btw god parents are often misunderstood as being the people who your children would go to in the event of your/dh's death and that is not true unless you appoint them legally.

I guess it's a matter of opinion. I will admit that until about a year ago I thought that the Godparents were the people to whom were supposed to raise the children in case of an unfortunate occurrence happens to the parents. I learned than that is determined within the parents will.

A Godparent is supposed to guide the children through life and teach the children when a parent cannot. Whether it be a religious following or a spiritual following. I can guarantee that my sisters (who were raised Jewish but my dad is Catholic so we know both religions) know more about the Catholic religion then the people that I would HAVE to choose because they are Catholic. Again while I understand that the person should be able to teach the child and help them follow the Catholic faith, I would rather have someone who knows what they are talking about, that I trust, and that is just as much spiritual, then pick someone just because they have a Baptismal certificate and can't name 3 saints off the top of their head.

Like I said it's a matter of opinion and I can say that we agree to disagree.
