Low Iron and vitamin C question

Took DS for his 9 month appt and they did his blood work so he'll have less needles at 12 months. Anyway, he had low iron. She prescribed him iron and said he had to take it with juice with vitamin c. She mentioned OJ. I didn't think babies drank OJ. DS has never had any juice, so any recommendations would be great. Also anyways to add iron to his diet.
TIA

Re: Low Iron and vitamin C question

In order to absorb iron you need vitamin c. Some sources of vitamin c are broccoli, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, Leafy greens (spinach is high in iron as well), tomatoes, peaches, blueberries, and citrus fruits. I don't give my 8 month old orange juice but I do give her mandarin oranges and the foods listed above. Some people don't give tomatoes or citrus till after 1 year but both the pediatrician and I agreed it was ok. Meat is a very good source of iron so are beans and spinach. The cereal is most likely fortified with iron as well. Chat Icon

Re: Low Iron and vitamin C question

Thank you! He eats all of that except tomatoes and citrus. He just started meats, so more of those should help. We really didn't push the cereals bc they constipated him so badly. He has to take his iron drops with juice so I guess I'll see what juice has good vit C. Maybe white grape? I feel like OJ is so harsh on their little bellies.
Ugh he is EBF so of course I feel like this is all my fault and I failed him.

They said OJ. I'm just questioning that.

Don't feel like this is your fault! Breast milk just doesnt have the iron like formula does. Did your ped have you start on a vitamin at 6 months that included iron? As for the cereal, did you try the whole grain oatmeal. I know the rice was really constipating to dd but the oatmeal she had not problem with. My dd is EBF as well and the ped wanted her to take the vitamin with iron at 6 months. She will not take it! I'm a registered dietitian by profession so I just make sure she gets all of what she needs from both the breast milk and what I give her to eat. Good for you to question the Dr on the juice. Sometimes they don't give the best advice when it comes to nutrition. I would have raised an eyebrow at that recommendation as well!

Re: Low Iron and vitamin C question

The vitamin C helps the body absorb iron.
I water down some OJ and let her have it with that.
She never had a problem with the acid of the OJ.

I'm actually low iron and am taking supplements. Since I really don't like to drink OJ I make a blueberry spinach smoothie with chobani yogurt. Seems to do the trick! Make a big batch and freeze a little so you have some made for when he takes his supplements.

I take iron and I just take it with water. I think as long as you are not taking it with milk it's fine. Unless of course your body is deficient in vitamin C as well.
