Re: Not giving in to your toddler
DS does the same thing.
I think he learned the idea of possession and now has a hard time whenever he doesn't get to take HIS toy or blankie or pillow when he wants to.
He also gets upset when things are not how he wants them. Yesterday he threw a ten minute tantrum because his ice cream sandwich broke in half when he was opening it.

OMG my son does the same thing when good breaks! If a cookie breaks he freaks. If his breaks apart his bagel, freaks! I just tell him that means he has TWO instead of one

I swear all kids at this age develop a form of OCD or something! It's like part of the normal development process or something! My DD freaks out if there is a crumb on her high chair tray, a piece of lint on her foot, or a fuzz on her crib sheet. She gets hysterical!
I swear, they are such strange little creatures, these children of ours!

My issue is. . .WHEN should I give in??
Like, if I pick out the blue dress, and DD automatically starts freaking for a pink dress and its appropriate and she CAN wear it. . .do I stick to my guns so she doesn't start challenging everything? OR do I just let her wear it?? I have trouble with figuring that out.
I give in when it comes to situations like this, BUT I don't respond to screaming and tantruming and freaking out. I make DS/DD calm down and ask nicely.

Re: Not giving in to your toddler
the shrieking is another thing
this morning on the drive to daycare - he started shrieking. ear piercing shrieks. i ignored it. he did it maybe 6 times over the course of 45 seconds. he then said "mommy?" and I replied. He smiled and said "love you" so I know he was looking for my reaction and I didn't give it to him until he stopped shrieking and addressed me properly.
all cause and effect at this stage I guess.

Re: Not giving in to your toddler
good I am glad you posted this- this whole thread will be amazingly helpful in my house....
I think I give in way too often because of my working moms guilt! But I love the idea of giving options and T's idea of the crazy distractions midway between their tantrum.
lots of hugs karin- hopefully all our kids will be normal again soon and we will survive the toddler years lol

Re: Not giving in to your toddler
when ds wants to take a toy in the morning we say no we dont want to lose it at daycare.
when he comes in yhe house he will take his shoes off cause we told him they are dirty.
when he flips out we remind him to behaive or he will get a time out...if he continuez he actually gets the time out...knows we mean business and jne doeznt repeat it cause he remembers...
its all about consequences. my sis and bil just gave in. they tried timeout but didnt stick to it....and their kids are 7 and 10 and wear the pants in the house and still dont say please or thankyou either.
